Obsucre music publication rolling Stone called Pinkerton the 16th greatest album ever, and the album has sold a million copies. Don't like it all you want,

I don't doubt you. I'm just not in touch. Can't say I don't like it because I've never heard it. But I will give it a try.

but pretending Pinkerton is some obscure album is contrary to reality. It's not Dark Side of the Moon, but it is pretty famous.

Ok, ok... obscure to ME. It's tough these days to keep up with music because artists are not presented the way they used to be.

A "great guitarist" is usually antithetical to having a great band. Guitarists, left to their own devices, will destroy rock n roll.

That's why Keith Richards is awesome. Play the f'n riff. The only people who want to hear you noodle are other guitarists.

This is why I consider Jimmy Page to be the greatest guitarist ever. He used the guitar as a tool for making songs better, not for showing off.

I think Kurt Cobain is the man. But I put Bradley Nowell on a very high pedestal. And not just because he died. Dude was just oozing talent.

Bradley was actually a good guitarist, though.

OK, the title of the thread is "Unpopular opinions", not "Brain dead opinions".

"EDM" is a pretty dumb phrase and I don't think Daft Punk even fits that category anymore

I was just reusing what the guy was saying kind of as a blanket term. We can just say electronic music

quote:

Their latest song was recorded with the traditional guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums.

Plenty of electronic music is like this. Many of the producers also play a wide variety of instruments and use them in their music. Daft punk using guitar, bass, and keyboard isnt saying anything special about them at all.

The group I mentioned, Pendulum, uses a variet of instruments in their music also. Guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, saxophone, trumpet, trumbone, etc. Their live act uses pretty much everything except the brass.

quote:

Sure they became famous via house music 18 years ago but they have evolved since then.

as has all the electronic music. was saying that while they rarely ever tour and havent put out anything, in what 6 years, the current people are making great music.

quote:

They also have a big crossover appeal. I know several people that hate DJs and that whole "scene" yet love Daft Punk (hip hop people from the Kanye collab, top 40 listeners, and especially jam band fans)

Oh I know they have a huge fanbase. When people were riding around with cd cases in their car, everyone had a daft punk cd or at least a mix cd that had some songs on it. That doesnt make them any better than they actually are. I agree though that they have a ton of influence over the electronic music world and theyre living legends in that sense

I would say that they definitely don't get the recognition that they deserve because of how bizarre and fairly small their catalogue is.

I will say that Mike Patton is definitely the most talented rock vocalist since Freddie Mercury, and he might actually be more talented.

The only thing I take issue with is the word "definitely." I'd put Mikael Akerfeldt, Devin Townsend, and Darroh Sudderth up there with him. That's just off the top of my head, but Mike is definitely in the uppermost echelon.

I guess the better phrasing would be "definitely in my opinion." The stuff that he can do with his voice, even beyond singing, blows my mind.

ETA: I'll just leave this here.

i think the socal punk scene bands like suicidal tendencies and infectious grooves have been completely overlooked and trashed.

the worst thing metallica ever did was quickly replace cliff with jason and get back in the studio. their first album with jason was garage days, their last was garage inc. the bookends of stagnation.

jimi hendrix is the most overrated guitarist of all time. his "lore" has been more influential than his talent ever was.

manson has put out some great albums while people are busy trashing his looks and stage show.
