Someone finally answered my question of that "other trendy southern rock band with the fat chick singing." An ex (hipster) of mine gave me their album and told me I'd love it. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't special. Talk about overhyped. Definitely has that faux indie aesthetic.

I dont think there is anything indie about it... to me its more of that soul revival... which is kinde niche-y and has very little staying power... maybe as a live act.

For me its OK, when heard live, etc... but the pay off upon repeated listen is minimal... something that you'll see tons of in the used CD bins in a few years...

I don't hate the blues, but I recognize it is a very narrow genre that results in very little true creativity today. It's the kind of stuff I really only care to listen to when getting drunk and laughing at the BR Blues Society types reinforcing the stereotype that white people can't dance.

I'll say that Jack White has distinct tone, but best is really opinion. When I think great guitar tone, my mind goes to the likes of Frusciante and Robert Fripp.

I loved that song when it came out, but it wore out pretty quickly. Now I want to stab Meg White every time I hear it being chanted at a sporting event.

Well, the reason for that was distribution. Having a successful act on an indie label would actually potentially bankrupt the label. Epitaph had this problem with the Offspring, as they didn't have the money to distribute several million copies of the album. Same with Sub Pop and Nirvana. They had to take big label money or they were going to go under. So long as their actual operations are independent, I don't give a crap if they take a check from Columbia so they can press and mail off a bunch of copies to stores.

A gold record is actually about the worst possible thing that can happen to an independent label. What changed wasn't shame but the rise of the mp3. You don't need the majors distribution anymore. You could sell a bunch of albums without running into huge costs to press and ship all of those copies.

The best run indie label out there is Merge, they way they grew slowly and organically is the reason they were able to sign Arcade Fire a decade ago and not lose them to a major...

They have also helped them fund many other smaller bands over the years..

A lot of indies are run by people with no business sense that get in way over their heads when demand (like mentioned above) occurs...
