Loved it! It had some great Led Zeppelin music in it, especially "That's the Way". I've been listening to nothing but Led Zeppelin and Yes since.

If I am remembering correctly, I believe it was the first film Zeppelin ever gave permission to feature its music. Of course, it's obvious why knowing the back story. Great flick.

Wasn't Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" featured in Fast Times at Ridgemont High?

Yes - it was supposed to be Stairway, too. "Whenever possible, put on Side I of Led Zeppelin IV."

Crowe wrote the script for Fast Times, as well. Recall in Almost Famous, that was semi-autobiographical - he did graduate HS early and started working - in his mid 20s he went "undercover" at a high school for research and that was source material for Fast Times. He was dating Nancy Wilson of Heart (and she made a brief appearance in the Corvette, if you'll recall) at the time of Fast Times and the pair ultimately married. Not sure if he used Nancy as his go between or not - he knew everyone in the music business from his days with Rolling Stone.

Flash forward to Almost Famous - he tried again to get Stairway (a deleted scene, synced up with Stairway is widely available on Youtube) - I believe Plant and/or Page has been quoted saying they like Cameron and have agreed to let him use some of their music, but they hold on tightly to Stairway just out of principle.

Crowe has also been quoted as saying he wouldn't have made Almost Famous if he had known he wouldn't get approval to use Stairway.

From IMDB

quote:

The film is based on Cameron Crowe's early life. Crowe excelled academically and was skipped ahead two grades at elementary school, as William is in the film, which made him much younger than the other students in his class. He began to write rock music articles, first for his school paper, and then for the fanzine The San Diego Door, and the magazines Creem and Circus. He met the editor of Rolling Stone on a trip to Los Angeles and aged 16 had his first cover article, which he wrote whilst following the Allman Brothers tour of 1973.

quote:

Stillwater is a composite of bands and musicians who Cameron Crowe met whilst working at Rolling Stone. It is said to be likely that guitarist Russell Hammond is based on Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers, who Crowe went on tour with in 1973.
