But I gave Distance over Time a listen. I was pleasantly surprised how cohesive and well mixed it was. The drums weren’t stale and it’s probably the first album since Portnoy’s departure that I didn’t “miss” him per se. I would go so far as to say the percussion was what really made this album stand out and it felt more like their late 90s stuff that I really enjoyed.

I know I’m a bit late to the party but can anyone blame me? Hasn’t been a good Dream Theater album since like...4 albums ago. Black Clouds and Silver Linings I’d say. What y’all think?

Its more straightforward rock and less prog. I think it would be easier for non prog fans to get into.

Out of the post Portnoy stuff, I like A Dramatic Turn of Events and Distance Over Time the best. The Astonishing I couldn't get into at all. As far as MP goes, The Winery Dogs are pretty good and Sons of Apollo are fantastic. Jeff Scott Soto is terribly underappreciated.

It’s a good album but it still missed Portnoy.

I love the old DT and I agree anything after Black Clouds just did not hold my interest. I still think Images and Words was their masterpiece. I will give Distance over Time a second listen.

I used to really like them ........

Until it was the background music for an entire dragonball Z movie. Cartoon music? Couldn’t take them seriously after that

Don’t know if it helps or hurts but “A Change of Seasons” was used in the 2002 Winter Olympics.

It was Scenes from a Memory, a pretty dark and serious album....

turned into a cartoon movie soundtrack
