I thought I read where one of the record pressing factories burned down. Apparently there only a handful.

I've been working on re-building my Music Room. I suggest buying a pricing guide to help catalog your collection. Learning how minor differences in the pressing, label or cover can make an old record worth a lot is fun. I have pulled $50 albums out of a $2 bargain bin many times. Sometimes it is something as simple as a color variation in lettering. Fun and cool hobby.........

I have a lot from the 90s when CD was king

I HAD a lot until Katrina claimed them all as her own. Now I just buy specific records that mean something to me.

I tried that App for a bit, but it does not go into much detail about the different pressing variations and such. There are some "Rabbit Hole" sites that really break that stuff down. I pulled an old album out of a box a few weeks ago that was listed at $80 with black label and white letters. If the letters would have been silver it would have been worth $500.

I've found it very useful in detailing different pressings tbh

I was being playful based on the post I was replying to speaking in the exact same manner.

I'm pretty sure the business owners read/post here. I would prefer they just take the hint and reconsider their practices without me having to damage their specific reputation.

I also hate the tactic of not pricing the stock and then just spitballing a price at check out. Which of course depends on how empty the coffer looks at that particular moment.

Insane

One of the most annoying adjectives of the Twenties.

If something costs more because of increased demand or limited supply, that isn’t insanity, That is predictable market behavior.

I haven’t bought vinyl in decades, but I was recently killing time in a record store that had a big inventory of classic rock albums. The prices on them were similar to those you listed.

“Over priced” is a phrase that drives me crazy. Apparently economics was not required in most school curriculums.

The solution to the “vinyl vs. vinyls” conundrum is simple. Instead of arguing the finer points of hipster lingo, just call them what they are—records.

…and to the OP—and this is just my humble opinion—but I would be a bit hesitant putting a $40, 180 gram record on a travel record player such as the one in your pic. A record player of that category is likely to have a very, very cheap cartridge/needle.

I state this fact because first, that type turntable/cartridge combo really won’t reveal any of the attributes of using the vinyl medium versus digital, and second, the needles on many “travel style” players are almost like thumbtacks, which may actually damage the microgrooves of LPs.

…again, just my observation. Hope your kid enjoys and sticks with it!

About $60K in damaged records.

Probably not. They're more likely to just go out of business.
