Anyone here into Van Morrison? I recently (past two years) got into his music and the man can sing. Im shocked that he is still doing shows at his age as well. I've read that he is sort of a douche IRL though but I'm sure spending basically your entire life in the music industry will do that to you. Is anyone aware of some good live shows on DVD or some albums that are worth checking out? I have the Last Waltz album, and Moondance, Wavelength, and a few random greatest hits albums but I cannot find Veedon Fleece anywhere that isn't crazy expensive. Any other albums or songs that I should check out? Seems like he has a gazillion songs.

It's Too Late To Stop Now (live album) is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Ahh yeh ok thank you, I think I have one disc from that album that I bought from a used music store in Shreveport but I'd have to double check (if its the live album I am thinking of with 2 discs). IF not I will definitely get it, because I think that is the album with the live version of "Sweet thing" that is insanely amazing. The man's vocal range is quite amazing, I'm not sure how I just now recently got into his music. I guess The Sopranos was the first time I heard him and I downloaded Glad Tidings but didn't really discover his other songs until years later.

Edit: I just checked I do have St. Dominics Preview album which is amazing as well. He really is one of those guys like Waylon Jennings, who sounds even better live.

Veedon Fleece is available on iTunes. Are you looking for a hard copy? Fantastic record in any case.

Astral Weeks is one of the best albums of all time. Definitely check that one out.

Big fan of the guy and his music, but this statement seems to be true.

Interviews with him are painful to read. Just a grumpy surly bastard. Saw him at Madison Sq Garden several years ago. He cursed the band several times and had literally no banter at all with the audience. I get that the music’s the main event but he just seemed inconvenienced by the whole thing.

Also, the live tunes are awesome but if you go in expecting a hits show, you will be disappointed.

My fav album is No Guru, No Method, No Teacher.

Here Comes the Knight is my #1 VM track.

Word of warning: album is EXPENSIVE.

My man. His best material is a little off the radar. I think I did a 75th birthday thread somewhere. Kafka on here scours the internet for great bootlegs back in the day.

No. But there are some expanded versions out. Spotify has them all. Huge fan. The top albums

1. Astral Weeks
2. Moon Dance
3. Into The Music

Its Too Late To Stop Now is the best live.

I wasn't aware that it was on iTunes I had just been looking for a cd version. I will look into that. Yeh, I read that he was pretty hard on his bands and even in some live performances on youtube you can see him getting pretty irritated when they deviate from what he's trying to do.

Yeh I recently discovered that whole "Them" being their own band thing not too long ago they have some great songs. I need to get the albums because I have only heard the hits (Here comes the nights/ Its all over now Baby Blue) etc. But I am sure there are many more.

Edit: I'll have to check at my parents house I think my uncle left some cd's a while back and there were a few VM cd's in the pile.

Casual music listener I guess, but by bootleg do you mean like someone recording in the crowd? Dumb question I'm sure lol but yeh I've notice he (and like I had mentioned Waylon) played so many shows and did so many covers of everyone's songs that every time you hear them play it they have like 4 or 5 different ways that they sing the song, which is pretty cool.

I was raised on Van Morrison. He is worshipped in Cajun Country as the single biggest influence for Swamp Pop. I have the Astral Weeks album as well as a double-deluxe greatest hits album.

Here's a Thanksgiving performance where Van totally stole the show. Caravan

I had never heard this take but it is intriguing to say the least. I've sort of found it interesting to look at his music/technique in contrast with say the Stones or Beatles. Where they are more blues influenced and took it to rock music, it seems VM has a heavy soul/R&B influence and took it to rock music. I haven't heard a whole lot of swamp pop (born in south La but grew up north of i-10) but let me look into that. Also @SCtmo thanks for the link to the thanksgiving show I'm gonna watch now, he definitely stole the show on the Last Waltz and that is quite the feat.

Edit: ahh it is the Last Waltz show, I didn't realize that was on Thanksgiving. yeah that is what really got me on the Van kick that I am on right now. Looks like someone threw some awful outfit on him and kicked him on stage last minute then he just kills it.

I have never heard a swamp pop band that didn’t play most, if not all, of the following Van Morrison tracks:
Wild Nights
Brown Eyed Girl
Domino
Jackie Wilson Said
Tupelo Honey

It is my favorite album of all time. And, not to be a music snob or anything, but I have well over a thousand albums in my music collection.

Can someone please start a LA music thread (this board has needed one for quite a while). Let's keep this one Van.
