Great quality broadcast of a show from Van's greatest period. He even does a great cover of a song I've never especially liked (Dylan's "Just Like A Woman") as well as brilliantly reworking the Them classic "Friday's Child". A must for the Van fan, and along with It's Too Late To Stop Now a decent starting point for newbs.

6. Tupelo Honey @28:56
7. Wild Night @35:02
8. Just Like a Woman @39:36
9. Moonshine Whiskey @47:13

Set 2

2. You're My Woman @59:57
3. These Dreams of You @01:05:45

I have many of his albums. The live in San Francisco I have on CD. It's a good listen.

Van has always been near the top for me. I've been lucky enough to see him several times live--yes he's out of touch with the audience sometimes, but sometimes he's classic. His recording are epic, and all the classics have been mentioned here already.

One album that hasn't is Enlightenment from 1990. No classic hits on this one but one of my favorites of all. Give it a listen all the way through.

We did a Louisiana rock bands one and a current New Orleans bands thread relatively recently.

We could do one of our favorite all-time non-New Orleans Louisiana bands of all genres.

No

a LA Music thread

New Orleans R&B (Fats, Longhair, Toussaint), Cajun, Zydeco, Swamp Pop, Dixieland...

Not some heavy metal shite where the band happens to come from Slidell.

What if we did a Louisiana music tournament bracket?

ETA is this Louisiana enough for you? Rough cut from the album I’m in the process of recording. Drums are programmed, but I’m doing all of the instruments and vocals. Haven’t started mixing or mastering yet.

I'll check that one out. I have heard a lot on youtube but they're from random albums and I'm getting to where I like to hear the whole album for the "context" vibe (if that makes sense). His version of Like a Woman is amazing as well. Some of his later stuff is surprisingly really good imo. Only a dream, When the leaves come falling down, Just like Greta, Great Deception (not sure if the last two are later work or not).

I will check this one out. He has some songs that I've never heard and when I hear them I'm baffled they weren't more commercially successful.

Also, not sure if this concert has an actual cd version but I find it extraordinary how he's able to blend multiple songs together and make goofy noises and it comes out perfect.

Can someone just start a thread called "Let The Good Times Roll - The Louisiana Music Thread" and I'll take it from there.

You have the shining examples of my numerous classic genre threads to provide inspiration.

Started lol but I am not extremely knowledgable about La music other than rap music of the past 20 years. so someone else will have to pick up the slack on that one.

a douche IRL

This is fake news. Van does not like fame, so he is an intentional recluse. He values his privacy and stays away from cameras and press as much as possible. This falsely portrays him as a douche, because we only see and hear how he is with the press that he tries to avoid.

As for Van the musician and songwriter, I personally believe he is the greatest of all time. He is one of the rare elites that is a multi instrumentalist who can perfectly compose and play any genre of music. Prince is another one, even though I am less of a fan of his work (massive appreciation for it though). Van has collaborated with artists spanning many genres, and he has crafted incredible original songs of them all. His catalog is extensive, and it is quite eclectic.

I think others could argue with merit that there are others better than Van, and I grant that. Picking the best is a matter of taste, whereas picking a handful of those considered in contention of the best is more objective. Van absolutely needs to be in the latter category even if your taste doesn't put him as your personal GOAT. Dude is a genius

ETA: Regarding which records to check out, I will add this to the list. This along with Astral Weeks and Moondance are his 3 best IMO, and this is probably my favorite of them all (though that changes often).

Glad to hear that. I prefer to not think of him as being a douche, but even so like I said I am sure given how long he's been in the music industry (through some of the heydays of Record Label frickery) he would have a right to be standoffish with fame. But yeh he is a very rare breed of musician.

Hard Nose the Highway. I need to get that one, I think that is the album with the "Great Deception" song. I'm surprised how hard it is to find some of his albums and how expensive some are. I ordered a few more: Astral Weeks, Wavelegnth, Poetic Champions Compose (fyi Queen of the Slipstream holy shite wow), and Beautiful Vision. I have a few more in a pile of cd's I've acquired from family so I'll have to check there.

Was backstage at Acura Tent one year he played. He is a complete dick to everyone around him. I couldn’t believe he acted that way and it appears it’s just who he is. I do like some of his stuff though

Can't comment on if he's a "dick", but he is a strange performer at times. I've seen him sing songs with his back to the stage. If he put out a jazzy album he'll play jazzy arrangements of everything, and IF you want to hear a hit, you may not recognize it or may not hear one at all. However, the last time I saw him he was like a hits catalog. All up to the Man's mood.

All that being said, his catalogue is epic, and I'll still see him every time.

Yeh I really want to see him live before God forbid something happens. But I get that vibe, like he never plays the same song the same way twice. At first I thought maybe he was like kind of burnt out from doing a lot of psychedelics back in the day or something but I now think he's just an extreme introvert that hates performing but knows he has a tremendous gift and just goes with it best he can.

I personally think Van Morrison has more great songs than any artist. He's an incredible musician. I continue to hear songs from him when going down a Van rabbit hole that I've never heard (no one else seems to know them either), but they're great. I love exploring his music. It just makes you feel good.

Someone mentioned "Hard Nose the Highway." That's one I didn't know until recently. Great song...reminds me of some stuff on Veedon Fleece. "The Healing Game" has some great ballads with sax in addition to "Rough God Goes Riding" which is a great first track on that album.

Just a few songs that aren't usually lumped in with the hits that I love:

-Stranded
-Celtic New Year (Lousiana mention)
-And the Healing Has Begun

More Upbeat:
-New Biography
-Redwood Tree
-Real Real Gone

Also, this is an awesome scenic video someone shot driving around a mountain set to "Philosopher Stone". The best scenery and another good song:

Philosopher's Stone

Philosopher's Stone and And the Healing Has Begun are incredible. I also just recently heard a cover he did of Solomon Burke's "Fast Train" that was great. I love that song and Van did it justice, a lot of times covers don't come close but Van did it good.
