I knew you'd show. You're the whole reason I listed Pantera as thrash. I knew you'd show up and argue and here you are. A couple of websites?

Yes...you linked a couple of websites. Metal Storm's genre categorization is not very consistent with most other publications, and List Challenges are hardly classifies as a worthy source in regards to metal.

Yes, I can. I agree, not all elements are in every song, but hell yeah it's a thrash record and a power groove metal record all in one. For frick's sakes -- IT's A LOT of shite.

I'm not saying that thrash cannot be a diverse-sounding genre, because certain thrash bands sound like souped up Motorhead clones and others border on progressive or power metal, but there comes a time when a band's sound manages to transcend a specific genre (e.g. Metallica on the Black Album was not really much of a thrash band) and consequently the band has adopted or created a new sound altogether.

The only reason I'm making such a big fuss about what constitutes as thrash is because the OP specifically discussed thrash metal albums.

If we don't bother to adhere to genre classifications and labels, then this discussion is no longer limited to a single sub-genre and begins to go off in a number of directions which deviate from the initial subject.

What?

I don't find that Rocky's guitar really comes through with as much as power as on subsequent records and the volume is even on the lower end compared to other thrash albums.

Listing a complaint of production quality on a DIY hardcore album from the early 80's is akin to complaining about too much distortion on a metal album. ST's first album wasn't thrash and I don't care what revisionists want to label it. Why?

I'm pretty sure Rocky didn't show up until Join the Army and that's when it started crossing over to thrash.

Fair enough. Would you say it's more of a thrash record than Metallica

Certainly.

Reluctantly I never got much into Megadeth, so I don't want to comment here.

It is so damn hard to obtain a copy of that album. I really wish they wouldn't have waited until the late '90s to make a second record.

I don't remember where I found my copy at. I think I might have gotten it from some European website, years ago.

They did put out a live album that was much more readily available than the original.

but it is. it's a thrash-punk fusion. is it pure thrash? no. but purity of sound can be boring. I will label anything to a genre if it is pure or a creative branch off from it. What makes ST so great was their direction of merging the two genres.

Plus when Slayer covers your song, you are fricking thrash!

I wouldn't call it thrash at all, and I can remember when I was listening to it back then, nobody thought it was anything but punk. It sounds more like DRI or something like that than anything metal at that point. It wasn't until later that they started to crossover.

I wanna be a facist pig.

Here are my five favorites in no particular order:
Metallica -- Ride The Lightning
Anthrax -- Among The Living
Megadeth -- Rust In Peace
Kreator -- Coma Of Souls
Exodus -- Tempo Of The Damned

True. The Tom Araya cameo in the "Institutionalized" video sort of gives a false impression.

You're 100% right. I completely forgot that Rocky George didn't join the band until Welcome to Venice in 1985.

They definitely beat D.R.I. to crossover label and were much more effective at it in the end.

Be careful with that claim. Remember, Slayer also covered Judas Priest and several hardcore bands.

Good choice.

I find their releases following Pleasure to Kill as much more "enjoyable" listens. I still can't believe Pleasure to Kill receives such praise because those drums sound terrible to me.
