I didn't think it was possible but this album has by FAAAAAAAR exceeded any expectations I had.

I know it’s been kind of said before but this definitely feels like a swan song
Just a lot of pieces that feel like they were influenced by work from previous songs and albums. I love it

Danny was interviewed recently and said they want to do as many albums as Zeppelin and they want to get back in the studio very much quickly bc he's the oldest and to do more tool he has to do it while he can still slap those drums.
They just fulfilled their legal obligation and are past all the lawsuits that delayed the album to begin with.
I think they are doing more.
This certainly FEELS like a swan song, but my gut tells me it's not

I got beyond baked last night and did a listen through. When descending started, I was floating. Just incredible.

Hell, I'm already going to say it and perpetuate the cycle:
I don't know how they can top this album.

Parts of the album are growing on me after listening a few times but this one feels different. It's technically amazing, and that carries it, but it doesn't immediately gets its hooks into you like Undertow, Ænima, and Lateralus. Seems like they're in a different place mentally, which is completely understandable.

I wonder how long before they start releasing vaulted stuff that didn't make the cut.
I would love an instrumental album of shite they've stashed over the years.

I agree. It takes a few listens. Trust me.

After about the 10th or so listen, this has surpassed Lateralus for me, and I thought that impossible.
We will see if it holds up like that album has, but holy crap what a masterpiece.

That’s how I felt and now it’s with Lateralus

Tool has given me more musical enjoyment than any other band other than possibly Pink Floyd. That being said while I love this album it leaves me wanting more. Cant wait to see this one live

There’s def one more song out there... if this was it, I think they would have put it on the album.
Problem 8

I went back and listened to Lateralus and 10k days last night in my headphones just to get perspective and it's crazy how poorly mastered they sound next to FI.
Everything is just cranked to 11 and there's hardly any dynamics to speak of. Danny even sounds poor and he's going off.
The mixing/mastering on FI is really, really good

I imagine they will do a remastered soon.

If you read the back of the packaging, it was recorded on 2” analog originally...

This is the first album that I loved every song pretty much immediately. The previous ones took a lot of more time to appreciate all of the songs. I do wish their were a few more tracks here where Maynard brought the intensity of older Tool like in Tempest.

Maynard talking about his vocals...
“When I listen back to some of the earlier vocals, there are some qualities to those, but all I can hear now is incorrect vocal practices. Aggression’s fine, but it’s not sustainable. There’s no range to it. There’s a lot of…mostly screaming [laughs].“I can do that now, and make it so I’m not causing permanent damage to my vocal cords, and in the process actually open up [myself] to more subtlety within that vocal. From a distance it can still sound like a scream, it can still sound like a growl, but without leaving a permanent mark on your instrument.”
