but Tom is without a doubt a better songwriter.

I guess I like intelligent, clever, emotional lyrics and minor chords better than pee pee poo poo blink 182 lyrics that mark and tom are responsible for. blink was always a joke band.

lyrically they've ALWAYS had some really stupid immature songs. even in their mid 40's they were writing about dumb teenager stuff. Id consider myself a blink fan (mostly the older records) but I know what they are, and I don't take really any of their writing seriously. Adam's song is probably the most "serious" song they have written. One of their better ones. They are capable of writing good songs, but they'll never be on the level that matt skiba is as a songwriter.

Even blink themselves said alkaline trio were a HUGE influence on them in the late 90's early 2000's.

Tom has even copped some ALK3 songs in the past as well.
Don't believe me? listen to Cat like thief by Box car racer. Tom unashamedly copied "you've got so far to go" by alk3.

here's what blink had to say about alk3 back in 2004:

Yeah I've always been a fan of Blink, but I kind of took them for what they were. I'm a bigger Alk Trio fan. Shout out to Matt for helping them bridge the gap, I suppose. Alk Trio is one of the more underrated bands in the genre imo. Still putting out good stuff after all these years.

From Here to Infirmary is one of my all time favorite records. Remains, This Addiction, Agony & Irony.. all classics

^Sorry.. I got off track I know the thread is about Blink

But we’ve heard Skiba’s songwriting in Blink, and it wasn’t great. It’s not bad, it’s just boring. Skiba did great work in A3. I just didn’t like him as much in Blink as I liked Tom. I don’t need every band or every song I like to be super profound and deep. There’s room for Van Halen songs about f$&king hot teachers and Judas Priest songs about the danger of an ever-encroaching police state.

I can appreciate the goofy lyrics of First Date that takes me back to so many awkward first dates as a teen. All The Small Things parodied boy bands. I can also appreciate how Adam’s Song talks about teen suicide and loneliness, or Stay Together for the Kids discusses divorce. Sometimes I just want a fun love song. Sometimes I want a sad song. Sometimes I want to hate on the government. Blink delivered on the first two better than a lot of bands from the same era. If anything, it was their simplicity that made them so accessible and made it so easy to connect with their music.

Rick Beato does a good job of breaking down the subtle great things that Blink is doing in some of these songs. What Makes This Song Great - All The Small Things

he wasn't a good fit in blink 182. their producer sucked as well.

from here to infirmary blows away anything blink has put out.

tom is a better fit for the pee/poo pop punk genre.

I get they had some songs that were pee pee lyrics yes. Majority of their stuff isn’t, and some of it is really good. To just call them pee pee poo poo over and over while they have songs like ghost on the dance floor, I miss you, STFTK, and plenty others just sounds like you have some weird grudge against them.

have you seen their new ad on social media? the new song is called "edging" and all of the people in the video are talking about them "coming".

as I said before, they're a joke band. I don't hold a grudge against them. I just understand what they are.

anyone musician with a functioning brain would agree. john mayer wanks on guitar. isbell is actually interesting and is severely underrated as a guitarist.

Remind me to never trust your opinion about anything ever

This isn’t just a take I disagree with, it’s fundamentally wrong on so so many levels. I don’t even know how to explain just how wrong you are because I don’t know if someone with the capacity to be so wrong also has the capability of understanding why they’re wrong.

It’s one of the most objectively wrong takes I’ve ever seen on this board. If you don’t like Mayer fine, if you think he sucks on guitar fine, but to turn around and think Isbell is better makes the entire thing completely insane

That would be like me saying Tom Morello is a better guitarist than Steve Vai. It’s just not a defensible opinion. I really enjoy Tom Morello’s music, but that’s like comparing Tom Brady and Jordan Jefferson.

I gotta say, having been in college during blinks hayday and them being my favorite fun band back then, I’m super stoked for this. I’ve seen them once in 2011 and it was fun. I enjoyed the last two albums but am really pumped to have Tom back. I also loved Boxcar Racer and Angels and Airwaves, but my favorite side album was +44. I’m glad Mark is healthy and touring. Ready to rock!

Mayer isn’t a bad guitarist. I never said that. He is a great guitarist. He just wanks. Noodles. Has the same tired riffs over and over again.

One recent example of isbell soloing:
LINK

I know he gets hate because he’s “woke” and all of that. But he’s a better guitarist to me because he’s INTERESTING. His slide work especially. Mayer cannot hold a candle to what isbell can do sonically.

Case in point:
LINK

Now compare that to this:

LINK

That’s going through the motions noodling. Yes, he’s a great guitar player but there’s no UMPH behind it. It’s like Steve Vai. Flaming guitar solo’s. Very technical. But there’s nothing behind it. To me those kind of guitarists are hollow and boring.

Sure it is. Morello is at least creative and interesting
