To me, voices like him, Jorne Lande, Brent Smith, and others marked the end of any trace of cool in hard rock music. The notion of proficiency alone being the ultimate standard has brought rock music to it's current abject state of affairs. I'd much rather listen to a technically limited but interesting, expressive vocalist any day of the week.
