Has to be one of the best songs ever written. Gordon Lightfoot really doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Should definitely be above Dylan. So many great lines in that song.

“Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?”

“ Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.”

And probably my favorite line.

“ And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters”

Really brings home the human side of it and how it affected more than just the guys who were lost.

Gord was a very underrated songwriter.

Some of his best songs are ones you have never heard unless you listen to whole albums of his IMHO.

It's an experience. Everything about it synchronizes to narrate an incredibly vivid story. The music is perfect, not a note out of place.

It's a great song but "As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most" has always seemed clunky.

Few songs set a mood as well as that one does. He has such an incredible tone to his voice.

I don't get this take at all.

Easily one of the best ever written, and I believe Dylan himself is one of Gordon's biggest fans.

There's a documentary about him on Prime. Haven't watched yet

I watched it and it was good but it was too long (they drug out some parts that added no real value) and when you hear him talk it's not the voice I expected to hear.

At work yesterday I talked with someone who works on one of those huge ocean-going container ships. Let's just say that they all know that song.

Good point. Much like Townes Van Zandt, although Gord had a lot more commercial success.
It is funny how some of the most gifted songwriters/musicians are overlooked by the public/media because they don't have that flashy appeal that is pushed on the music biz, and for radio ratings.
They are always recognized by the ones who work the same career and truly know how good they are though.
