The War on Drugs

How much better would they be if the singer was decent? The music is very good, awesome I’d say. But it’s hard to understand what he’s saying. I feel like they’d be much better with another vocalist. What do y’all think?

His vocals don't bother me at all, but I'm not very picky about vocalists. As David Berman (RIP) says "All my favorite singers can't sing".

I'm not the biggest fan of the Bob Dylan nasal type vocals, but it works fine for the War on Drugs.
I do prefer songs where he drops some of the nasal tone, but it's really never bugged me much. It's not the best part of WoD for me, but doesn't really hurt my enjoyment much.

He’s not supposed to be a world class singer. The vulnerability in his voice helps convey the themes of TWOD’s music better.

I sometimes like bands that always sound the same. I do not with this band.

War on Drugs and Trail of Dead and Built To Spill are three of my fav bands of the last few decades that I wish had better lead vocals.
And yet, are now too ingrained, that some songs would never sound better to me, if sung by someone else.
But, I would've enjoyed Chris Cornell singing lead on 'Another Morning Stoner'

It was kind of a stumbling block at first, but it made me listen to the songs a little closer. I like to read lyrics anyway.
I think he's a decent singer and the Dylan influence doesn't bug me.
Growing up listening to Led Zep I couldn't understand all of Plant's singing either until I listened to them enough.

Saw them live a few years ago and I actually think his voice sounded pretty good live. Almost like Kevin Kinney from Drivin n Cryin in a live setting. He's come a long way though. He used to have crippling stage fright and early on would face away from the audience to sing.
They're amazing live, btw.

Lots of great bands didn’t have amazing vocals. Do you like Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Springsteen and Dire Straits? That’s the War on Drugs, but throw in some amazing atmospheric music on top.

I'll add REM, Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker, Hum, Pavement, Modest Mouse, Dinosaur Jr, X (although John Doe is a pretty good singer....but certainly not American Idol caliber), Built to Spill....etc, etc,....

Ha ha how many Idol contestants would be good rock singers? I remember seeing Taylor Hicks sing before Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston. My first thought was "He won American Idol? Dude's not that good."

Do You even Daughtry bro?
I haven't watched it in a long time, but they have some really good singers on there.

Oh yeah forgot about Daughtry but never was a big fan of them. Mainly my kids watched Idol; I always saw it as pop-related and didn't pay much attention. That's kind of how I am with prime time TV in general. I mainly just tune into the networks for sports. I know, shallow.
