Judging by the answers in this thread, no one has a clear definition of "power pop"
quote:
"The yearning lyrics and melody, vibrant jangling guitars and brisk propulsive beat [Add harmony and you've got PP - K] all combine to make The Squires' 'Going All the Way' a transcendent rock n roll record"

You have people naming The Beatles, The Who, Blondie, etc, none of which I consider power pop.

Do you understand what power pop is?
Not sure why the song I posted doesn’t qualify? Not every thread is just an opportunity to try and post obscurities.

Clearly many people do not understand that Power Pop is a specific genre w/stylistic consistencies. They seem to think "power pop" = a "pop" song that is "powerful"

I think Matthew Sweet is the quintessential Power Pop artist.

Here's AI's definition of such:
quote:
Catchy melodies: Power pop songs often have strong, memorable melodies that get stuck in your head.
Vocal harmonies: Many power pop bands utilize vocal harmonies to add depth and sweetness to their sound.
Energetic performance: Power pop is typically upbeat and energetic, with driving rhythms and powerful guitar riffs.
Jangly guitars: The "jangle" sound of guitars, often achieved with a 12-string guitar or Rickenbacker, is a common element in power pop.
Concise song structures: Power pop songs tend to be relatively short and follow traditional verse-chorus structures.
Lyrical themes: While lyrical themes can vary, power pop often explores topics like love, longing, and youthful angst.
I might as well have said "tell me about The Beatles".

If we're doing Rick Springfield, then:
Souls
Love Somebody
Human Touch

Wow. What a great song!
I'm not sure I'd classify it was Power Pop, but I hear elements of The Byrds, Turtles and Hollies. Great song.

I would say "The Kids are Alright" fits in the power pop vein

Sort of like The Raspberries, but w/their guitars, soul, & angst surgically removed
