The most overrated album from each decade
Posted by danman6336

60's: probably Tommy by The Who, because the Who are terrible. I couldn't think of anything else supremely overrated. Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is pretty way overhyped, but I love Pet Sounds so it's hard to put them on this list.
70's: Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones. An average album that became the most legendary album by the band for some odd reason. Born to Run by Springsteen is a close second.
80's: anything by AC/DC or U2
90's: Nevermind by Nirvana followed closely by Ten by Pearl jam
00's: Kid A by Radiohead. The album that is now hailed as generation defining and the best album of the century etc etc etc is in reality about the 3rd best Radiohead album and filled with several extremely skippable songs and only really 2-3 really amazing songs. How this album's hype got so spun out of control I will never know.

Respectfully disagree on Exile on Main Street. It's a masterpiece.

I think it and OK Computer are interchangeable at 1 and 2

It is a classic case of being greater than the sum of its parts. I'd also say the only weak track is "Motion Picture Soundtrack" , but I know even that song is popular with people.

It really kicked off the electronic production that we still see to this day. It was by no means the first, but was no doubt a masterstroke that helped to popularize it.

Nevermind has been overplayed, but I would disagree about it being overrated. It moved music at the time in a totally new direction. It killed 80's pop, and spearheaded a real mainstream rock movement in the 90's. Its impact was enormous.

I've never heard anyone say that Dylan was exceptionally skilled at any instrument.

Maybe that Springsteen album was a bit of a reach, but I always hear Big Star and Lauryn Hill get hyped on best of lists. Big Star on this board even.
