From the OP:
quote:It's nice getting a reply every couple of years, and that's a great piece of music, but it does not belong in this thread.
The Great American Songbook is a hypothetical construct that seeks to represent the best American songs of the 20th century, principally from Broadway theatre, musical theatre, and Hollywood musical film, from the 1920s to 1960, including dozens of songs of enduring popularity.

bumping this thread gives me an excuse to post this:
from the first time i saw this clip a year ago or so i was mesmerized by it
the apparently effortless performance that is so absolutely perfect, live to tape with the orchestra around him, just phenomenal
and the take the CBS cameras captured - with his loosened tie and his styrofoam cup in hand - was the very one that was used on the record that still sounds so transcendent 60 years later
when i was younger i callously wrote off Sinatra’s meticulously crafted catalog as “old people music”
now that i’m old myself i recognize the genius

What’s New by Linda Ronstadt and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra (1983) is what got me interested. What a voice!!!

The Chimes - "I'm In The Mood For Love" (1961)
Doo wop remake of a '30s song by Jimmy McHugh & Dorothy Fields. Just managed to scrape into the Top 40
Never saw The Chimes in BR

"On The Atchison, Topeka and The Santa Fe"
All the movie scenes and choreography, I don't care about that. Song, lyrics and music, were so expertly written. Then the singers, production and the recording were so great. Huge achievement in my book.
Anybody who writes songs should listen to Johnny Mercer stuff.
"lyrical genius" aint a good enough description.

Unfortunately no Junior Barnard solo on this one, but great pedal steel and fiddle tradeoffs. One of the all-time great bands, that makes me pine for the days of true regionality in music.

Suzy Boggus had an album out several years ago that had many American classics on it. American Folk Songbook, included Shenandoah, wildwood flower, red river valley. Great listen

There are 2 threads:
This one, principally from Broadway theatre, musical theatre, and Hollywood musical film, from the 1920s to 1960, including dozens of songs of enduring popularity.
and
Old Timey -- a thread for pre-rock country, folk, and blues
Please choose wisely

A Sinatra cover from the prince of NY punk
Meant to be included on the classic Blank Generation album, but for some reason was left off and was not released until the late '90s 20 yrs later
