The Beatles’ Rooftop Concert: The Last Gig

Beatles Last Gig
A bit of Rock History for some too young to know. These guys were magical when they were together and a lot more than the "Bubble Gum" act they started out as. How frickin cool would this have been to be there at this time?? Take the time to read the article below and watch the entire video.........enjoy.......
On a cold day in January 1969, The Beatles, who hadn’t played live since 1965, took to the rooftop of the headquarters of Apple Records, located at 3 Savile Row, in central London. And there they played an impromptu last gig, much to the delight of Londoners on nearby rooftops … and to the chagrin of the police.
At the time, The Beatles were recording their final album, Let It Be, and the rooftop show let them run through various tracks from that last effort. Songs played during the set include “Get Back,” where the Beatles were accompanied by Billy Preston on the keyboards, and “Don’t Let Me Down,” “I’ve Got A Feeling,” “One After 909,” and “Danny Boy.” And finally “Dig A Pony” and another version of “Get Back.”
Famously, The Beatles’ live legacy ends with the police shutting down the show (it was a noise violation, you know?) and John Lennon uttering the immortal words, “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition.” That’s going out in style…

They were magnificent as a band. They harnessed the charts (all there was then) and then explored and expanded. But as good as they were as a band they were even more iconic as representatives of an entire generation that was doing things different. That wide impact was a lot due to the constrictions of the mediums of that day. Everyone watched the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. It was that or whatever else was on the other two networks. That's all there was.
Anyone that calls themselves a music fan better have watched the Beatles Anthology series. It's very well made. It is enlightening to what the era was about nearly as much as understanding what Beatlemania was.

They hadn't played live since 1966 or so in England, and the were still demigods.

This was a magical event, the entire 21 minute happening. What the Beatles did in 7 years and how much they evolved as musicians in that short time was unbelievable........

Oops - I was basing it on the fact that I couldn't see Billy Preston - but I see him now. However I'd still wonder about how the guitar cabinets (fender silverface reverbs or something similar) were recorded. You hear them being close mic'd - but I don't see any mics at all. It's pretty standard practice to overdub live performances.
Either way - you're right it doesn't matter - they were awesome.
