Was Sympathy for the Devil always so popular, it wasn't released as a single, so I doubt it got much AM air play? Was it popular in an underground sort of way or did it make a resurgence later?

"Devil" was always popular, but more cult-like and but not in the #1 chart popularity that "Paint" was. It was such a great lead-in as the opening track for "Beggars' Banquet", and so highly thought of over the years that it made Rolling Stone's top 500 rock songs at #32. I think it's just a really cool song.
Guns and Roses remake was awesome--over closing credits to "Interview with the Vampire". LINK
