Why does Ted Nugent not ever get mentioned amongst the greats, from that generation, for his guitar play?

His early stuff was really good, especially Journey to the Center of Your Mind, but he drifted toward a kind of 'formula' rock that seemed more about loud and less about creativity. I generally put him in the second tier behind the greats but ahead of most of the rest. Definitely fun to watch live, though !

One of perhaps three or four decent songs he ever did. The guy pretended to be a doper and frick up as part of his act. He could play scales pretty fast, but so can a lot of people.

Saw him open up for Kiss in 7th grade. He shot a flaming arrow into his guitar at the end of the set. In retrospect it was pretty lame but at the time it was BAD ARSE

I've never actually listened to any of his music, I mean maybe 3 or 4 songs.. And I wasn't comparing him to Clapton or Hendrix, just wondering if he was overlooked somehow.

He did the flaming arrow through the guitar into the stack blowing up bit when I saw him for my first concert at age 6...I was like HOLY shite! Then I got to meet him backstage because my uncle is good friends with him

Saw him with Bad Company. Did the same flaming arrow shot, except into a real life size cutout of Saddam Hussein. Early 90's.

Saw him in 93. He shot a deer decoy. I guess that's his thing.

I remember going to see Damn Yankees (with Nugent) and Bad Company at UNO Lakefront Arena. I think it was around that time. He did do the deer schtick and my ears hurt for a week afterwards.

Survival of the Fittest was good from the early stuff too
He gets mentioned but that's it, a mention. He might creep into a top 100 list but not the upper echelon
So my Nugent story...
in friggin Abbeville La., guessing '70-71 at some little old theater that maybe could go 500 people. It was an extremely loaded audience with a lot of screaming. We were worn out at conclusion. We head out to the car and there is Nugent sitting on a tailgate of a pickup still with just the loin cloth on that he wore in those days. We just hung and chatted with him for a while.
