SUB or Seaward (or anyone) - built to spill question

I see they are playing near me later this year so I got a little excited. I know very little about the band or much of their history, aside from loving the shite out of KILAS and PFNO. The first time I saw them I think they were down one of the members (unbeknownst to me) and one of you pointed it out to me afterwards. LIke I think they couldn't reproduce a lot of the sounds I was used to being short handed. The second time I saw them they had the "full" lineup and it was phenomenal, I think it was a KILAS tour.
Well I went to look at a website for this current tour and there's a picture of the lead and 2 women. Under the notes section it says, "Built to Spill is Doug Martsch, Melanie Radford, and Teresa Esguerra."
What is this? Were those 2 people a signifcant part of the lineup in the 90s? Unless you're a dieahrd would it be worth seeing that lineup? I looked at a recent show setlist and I'd only heard of about 50% of the songs.

They were not. I don’t believe they have played on any BtS albums (maybe on the upcoming one). They are just supporting Doug on this tour. BtS has basically always been Doug and a rotating group of musicians, although a few of the same guys did play on most of their classic albums.

BtS is probably my favorite band ever, so I probably would count as a diehard, but I would definitely go see them if getting there isn’t too much of a burden.
I think KILAS and PFNO are their best two albums (two of the best of all-time), but if you love those, I’d definitely listen to their other albums. Some killer stuff on those too.

I just got back from their show in Dallas. If you like BtS then it's a good show. They played all the old stuff. They have a big, full sound for a 3 piece so even if you kind of like them, it's worth it. I will say I miss the 5 piece band.

Just hope they don’t play all covers and one BTS song, like they did at the earl in Atlanta (special post shaky knees show in a small room)

That must have been a one off or special show. I've never seen them do that.
To the OP, Seaward answered your questions, but I'll say this. Built to Spill is best as a 5 piece. I've seen them once as a 3 piece, and while still good, they sounded a lot better with more than 1 guitar. Doug does a good job with effects to try and make the sound bigger when they are a 3 piece, though.
The last time I saw them was for the KILAS anniversary tour just before the pandemic and they were a 4 piece. Good show.
We are getting a new album soon. I hope it's good. I loved the single off their last album but the rest was kinda forgettable. Their last solid album for me was You In Reverse.

Maybe I'm just spoiled because I didn't grow up with them or have fond memories from youth of them, and only discoverd them as an adult via KILAS/PFNO which are masterful. But after those I started trying to get into theri other works at the time and I just didn't care for any of it. The first time I saw them live untethered moon had just come out so the show was mostly from that, and I rememvebr only really liking one song from it (never be the same).
Based on all the responses so far I will probbaly sit this one out.

KILAS
Looks like a good name for a gangsta rap album.
I’d like to suggest that you check out There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, if you haven’t. It’s the album that precedes PFNO. It’s a tad more poppy, but has some great songs.

You In Reverse.
My third favorite. A little more filler to me than Perfect and Secret, but Goin Against Your Mind, Conventional Wisdom, Gone, Wherever You Go, Liar and Traces are all absolutely fantastic. The other 4 songs I could skip.
On the other hand, I would argue the worst song on PFNO is better than the worst song on any other album by any artist ever. Absolutely no filler.

It's hard to believe that You in Reverse came out 16 years ago. I remember listening to it a couple times and not being all that into it. I was obsessed with Perfect From Now On at the time, and hadn't even gotten into KILAS yet. I didn't start to like You In Reverse until years later.

I had never even heard a BtS song when You in Reverse came out. I heard Carry the Zero for the first time in 2007 and that got me into them.

Convention Wisdom has one of my favorite intros in all of music.

I saw them play in Pensacola a couple of years ago, it was Doug with members of the band that opened for him. I can’t remember the bands name and I can’t find it online, but it was amazing. All the old songs sounded great. The trio is playing here in September, I’ll go check it out for sure.

Whoa! I’d love to have that kind of experience in discovering a band. I’m sure that there’s one out there.
