I think High Top Mountain may be the best country album in 20 years. It is good, if not great, from beginning to end.

While I rank those albums better than High Top Mountain all around, they aren't country albums to me. They're kinda tweeners....kinda country, kinda americana, kinda folk, kinda rock, but not completely one or the other.
Also, after a few more listens, I feel obligated to recommend to everyone to get the Sunday Valley album. If you like Sturgill, you'll love it. Different style, but it's really good.

I agree, all three of those albums are great but HTM is certainly the most "country", for whatever that is worth.
Sunday Valley album is also great. I hope Sturgil does more work like that in the future.

While Sturgill is definitely a blast from the past you can't exactly write off two albums of the genre that are at the forefront of innovation in the genre.
Today's country is a little Americana, a little folk, a little rock and a little country.

You're right. Sturgill's is more old school country but the others have their place. And I am certainly looking forward to more music from all three.
I also think it's pretty cool that Isbell has had both open for him this past year.

Apparently not. I have certainly never thought of Isbell as a red dirt artist. But, I don't have a clue what does or doesn't classify as red dirt.

Red Dirt is basically a geographical term encompassing alt-country artists from Texas and Oklahoma.
So Isbell is not a red dirt artist seeing as how he is from Alabama but he definitely plays the same type of music that red dirt artists play.
