You're clearly just trolling.
Please go to a mogwai show and tell someone they are a jam band.
Youll be laughed at. Hard.

Jam band is NOT a genre. It is a broad category used to describe bands that JAM LIVE. Which Mogwai does.
I don't give a frick what some hipster at a Mogwai concert wants to say about it.

quote:Experimental bands "individualize their music with unconventional time signatures, instrumental tunings, unusual harmony and key signatures, compositional styles, lyrical techniques, elements of other musical genres, singing styles, instrumental effects or custom-made experimental musical instruments." So just because experimental bands test boundaries and sometime cross genres, does not mean that they improv. live. Do you know what improvisation is? Improvisation is composed extemporaneously. Are you trying to say that all experimental bands improvise on stage? That they make up music offhand and on the spot? There is an entire methodology pertaining to how various jam bands signal each other on stage while improving. Bands like Umphrey's McGee and Mogwai have certain hand gestures, nods, winks, signs, etc. that they use to notify other band members when the music is changing. The vast majority of musicians could play their entire show alone on stage because their songs will sound the exact way they were rehearsed and are played every time. Jam bands like Mogwai, Phish, etc. change their music on stage as they go. This is why they have cult-like fans that follow them on tour; because the music is changing. Not all experimental bands improvise live.
So all experimental bands are jam bands?
Mogwai is a jam band.
You like jam bands.
Dude
quote:Last time I saw them was at a festival where other jam bands were playing. I'm sure many there would agree that the post-rock band Mogwai is a modern jam band. Don't get out much do you?

This. Hopefully he'll just go back to helping his friend or whomever attempt to book burned out bands to play at the Varsity, rather than offer his musical genius.

This one time Justin Beiber's band stretched one of his songs out an extra 15 seconds.
Clearly a jam band.

Why? It has turned out to be a pretty good discussion. Isn't that what the music board is for?
