Sitting here enjoying the day off, drinking coffee and listening to some of the greatest music of my childhood. I appreciate them more as I get older although I always liked them as a kid and growing up.

Steely Dan, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac just sum up the era of the late Seventies to me. My real first exposure to music back then. Just great music.

Growing up in the '90s I thought they were the epitome of lame '70s classic rock, but I honestly didn't know much of their music. I was an ignorant fool. They're one of my favorite bands now. The records are perfection and their show at the Lakefront Arena a couple of years ago totally blew me away.

Steely Dan takes a shite all over the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.

Still my favorite band of all time. If you're a fan of the music, go see them live. They didn't tour much back in the day but they tour pretty much every year now. They sound fantastic live, especially with Jon Herrington on lead guitar.

I really don't know much about them. Where should I start? Aja?

An all time favorite of mine. I celebrate their entire catalog.

That wouldn't be a bad call or Royal Scam either. You can also go chronologically through the catalog to see how their sound evolved.

I'm an '80's kid, but I think the '70's easy listening classic rock genre is the best. For some reason, I don't care for Can't Buy A Thrill. Aja is incredible, but I love Gaucho, too. From the opening line, you just feel like you're driving around out west when you listen to the album.

They started out more akin to what a band is, and they rocked. This was very short lived.

I don't know about all of that - as I've said before, much more of an abstract musical "idea" than a band - certainly the players that were drawn in to the "project" to play around and with Becker and Fagen were incredible musicians.

And to think, if Chevy Chase had been just a little better drummer, he might never have become Fletch or Clark Griswold.

I never dismissed them - FM was favorite of mine as a teenager, as well as Ricky, Hey Nineteen, and Deacon Blue. But, as I grew up, I appreciated the complexity of all of it more and more.

It is on the softer side of rock, no question. It is superficially kind of lame and milquetoast. But, they slip in those catchy parts and then, without smashing you over the head with it, just throw in a little "oh shite, what just happened" sideways as if to say, "Pay attention. Something is going on here." I hear something new almost every time.

I heard that song dozens of times before I figured out it was Steely Dan.
