I heard that song dozens of times before I figured out it was Steely Dan.

I was that way with Night By Night (Pretzel Logic). I kept hearing it on the radio and really liking it but didn't know who it was. Finally I caught the DJ announcing who it was and slapped my forehead. Who else could it be?

Back to Dirty Work, the way they do it live these days is great. David Palmer sang it originally and I guess it's out of Fagen's range. So now they let the girls sing the verses and it sounds fantastic.

You can also go chronologically through the catalog to see how their sound evolved.

You must do this. Don't jump ahead.

Some of my favorites are:

My Old School
Gold Teeth II
Bodhisattva
Don't Take Me Alive

To name just a few.

Have to take some time to listen to them to appreciate them, if you weren't born in that time period. Born in '81, so I had to listen to them a bunch to appreciate them outside of the songs everyone knows. They are great in concert.

In the 70's I wore out every album of theirs. Great stuff. Aja and Gaucho are great also but the music started evolving away from my preferences and I'd still rather listen to their pre-Aja albums. I did try Two Against Nature but just can't get into it at all.

They started out more akin to what a band is, and they rocked. This was very short lived.

My favorite SD album for this very reason.

In order:
Can't Buy a Thrill
Katy Lied
The Royal Scam
Aja

Countdown to Ecstasy
Pretzel Logic
Two Against Nature

Everything Must Go

Gaucho

Acura Stage--Michael McDonald playing before them.

Great video with 40 SD snippets for the initiate.

40 songs

You should give Gaucho another chance. I used to think it was pretty weak but it has grown a lot on me over the years. I rank it right up there with Aja and Royal Scam now.

I bought it in 1980 when it came out-I've given it 36 years.

I think that the quality of SD's other works just overshadows this album.
Maybe it was all the issues they incurred while working on the album...IDK..
Just one of those albums that doesn't fit my ear...

I did too but I didn't start liking it until the mid-90's. Just saying if you haven't given it a go lately, you might rediscover something you missed before.

You can You tube - The making of Aja . Very interesting to say the least . The Purty shuffle . I remember first hearing them at a Head shop on Government St. around 1974.

This is John Herrington SD guitarist, and four of the girls that have sang with SD on tour doing Pretzel Logic, I think the piano player has also toured with SD

One of my all time favorite bands, with Countdown to Ecstasy being my favorite album of theirs.

And Gaucho is awesome, didn't realize anyone hated that album.

Picked up a 99 cent copy of Fagan's Morph the Cat a month or so back and I love it too. Funky as hell. I'd never heard it previously.
