The Doobie Brothers were and are Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston period end of story, the McDonald configuration could almost be considered a different genre of music.

Do they even attempt to do any of the Michael McDonald era stuff?

They did "Takin' It to the Streets", McDonald's first single with the band. Decent job. Don't remember who sung it.

I actually really like both incarnations of the Doobies. Most bands that hang around that long get stale sooner--just as with Van Halen they changed, but successfully as far as I'm concerned. And just as with VH, they're back to the originals so I got to see both!

My take, Doobies were awesome!

Donald Fagen needs to retire. Only in it for the money now. I have seen Steely Dan 8 times dating back into the 90’s when they started touring after not for years. This was by far the most disappointing Dan performance for me.
Kid Charlemagne and Reelin in the Years which are 2 of my favorites both were awful.
Aja was the best song of the night!!

I won’t be seeing them for a 9th time!!

I saw the Doobie Bros last year with Chicago. Like them, but was more interested to see Chicago for sime reason. Left that concert a little disappointed with Chicago because they didnt touch how good a show the Doobie Bros put on (in my ooinion, it just wasmt clicking for me).

Ive seen Steely Dan years back with my dad. Actually toured with Michael McDonald at the time. Really, really enjoyed that show. Cant make it to the Houston show this year which isna bummer. But they come to The Woodlands often so I think Ill get another shot.

Just wah ha hooooooooo listen to the music.

Now I've got that stuck in my head. It's not your fault though, they closed with that last night.

It was my first time seeing the Doobies and I thought they did a pretty good job. They were fired up and energetic, especially Tom Johnston.

Steely Dan was very good too. They didn't replace Becker and I couldn't really notice much of a difference. Fagen seemed like he was very much into it. Carolyn Leonhart was gorgeous as always. Herrington was superb and Keith Carlock was an absolute monster.

My only complaints were that the Pepsi Center is great for a hockey game but a shitty place for a concert and the setlist was pretty standard stuff. The highlights for me were Dirty Work sung by the girls and Reelin' In the Years. It's my dream to see the Dan do some back catalog tunes like Dr. Wu, Caves of Altamira, Night by Night and Gaucho but instead we got the usual: Peg, Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, etc. Also Aja and Kid Charlemagne were particularly good.

All in all, it was a good show, not great but I love that music so how bad can it be?

This is yacht rock porn, thanks for the update. I've seen Carolyn in various Dan clips through the years and am always like My only worry is, like with the Eagles and Frey, is it too depressing without Walter?

Early in the show, between songs Fagen said something like you may have noticed that I'm missing my...partner. The audience gave a nice ovation in Walter's memory. That was kind of a sad moment but then he said we're going to carry on anyway and got right back to work.

It's kind of mean to say this but from a musical standpoint, I didn't really miss him. He was a great songwriter and was to a large degree responsible for their studio sound but I never thought he was a major part of the live band. I've seen Fagen twice (now 3 times) without Becker and enjoyed the performance just as much. Herrington always did all the heavy lifting on guitar anyway. That said, his stage banter was always pretty good, a skill that Fagen lacks.

Agree with everything you said except for that last sentence. I don't miss Becker's stoner rants. That's when I would hit the bathroom and get another beer.

He did tend to ramble; I'll give you that. But my point was at least he tried to interact with the crowd. Fagen will finish a song and then proclaim, "Well that was NEATO!" Which is sort of funny in an awkward way.

Lawd. I ran across that same video the other day browsing for Steely Dan music before the concert.

Dukes of September tour was really good by the way. I hope he does something like that again.
