Kind of a spinoff from the "best producer" thread: What are you favorite "sounding" albums--not content, but how the content comes across?

I think Nirvana's "In Utero" is a great one, as it's more stripped down--though Steve Albini, the producer says the released album is too overproduced.

Also, Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky" always sounded great to me, even though I don't consider it one of their best albums.

Any thoughts or favorites?

Spinoff: best sounding albums

What Mutt Lange managed to do with AC/DC's sound is nothing short of amazing. Most of the charm of their early releases was due to their sheer rawness, but Highway To Hell, Back In Black, and For Those About To Rock just sound so polished.

A part of me will always resent him for taming something so wild and unrefined. Let There Be Rock and Powerage have a particular appeal that the next several albums seem to lack despite possessing arguably better songwriting. I think it's a stripped down intensity that modest production on the part of George Young and Harry Vanda. I have heard a similar argument made about Nirvana.

However, in terms of best sounding, which I would argue is different from best produced, I would include some of the following albums:

Symbolic - Death (probably the best sounding extreme metal release of the '90s)

The Sound of Perseverance - Death (some might contend that the guitars are too clean and crisp for a death metal release, but I think it sounds perfect in every respect)

Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath (aside from Dio's phenomenal voice, you hear all three musicians as clearly as ever)

Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche

Metropolis Pt. 2 - Dream Theater

ETA: I just realized how nonsensical my original post was.

He also did a great job on a few Opeth albums. His remastered Rush and King Crimson albums are also great.

I am also a huge fan of David Bottril.

He seems to be behind many bands' best sounding albums:

Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise

Fair to Midland - Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True

Tool - Lateralus

Muse - Origin of Symmetry

Silverchair - Diorama

Boston - Boston (and the content isn't bad either).

Ditto for Abbey Road

(ETA: I should have said almost anything by Tool or produced by Mutt Lange would fall into this category).
