This could change weekly. These are currently my 5 favorite, not necessarily the best rock artists of all time.

Rush
Living Colour
Pink Floyd
Nine Inch Nails
Tool

One thing that annoys me about these lists are when people name 5 bands just because they’re older bands.

There are many many many more technically gifted, better lyricists, and better sounding bands than The Beatles, Eagles, etc but they’ll all get named ahead of really great bands who are a little newer than the afformentioned.

Everyone knows everything that came out after the 70s is trash. Good music only existed in the 60s and 70s. We have to keep regurgitating the same few bands over and over because what came first has to be the best.

Which is why I stated. "This could change weekly. These are currently my 5 favorite, not necessarily the best rock artists of all time. "

I understand what you’re saying. I guess it’s just for entertainment purposes and the longer lasting bands seem to get all the reward.

However, there were hundreds of bands from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that are completely irrelevant these days. Put it on any of the decades stations on XM and you’ll hear artists that you’ve probably never heard of. The reason is that they sucked then and they suck now. Just bc “they’re old” doesn’t mean they’re automatically good.

The reason the Stones, Zeppelin, Hendrix, etc. have staying power is bc they were so unique in their day. They brought in a new wave of music that many of today’s artists still recognize as major influences. For instance, the Black Crowes (who I consider a great band) were tremendously influenced by the Stones. Any guitar player today will say Hendrix was an influence on their playing.

I’m also a firm believer that great artists/bands can still be seen/heard in modern music. However, their greatness is to be determined. What will people say about them in 30, 40, or even 50 years? Only time will tell.
