I’m Gonna Be (500 miles) by the Proclaimers. 1988 release and I missed it.
Love that song. So quirky. So Scottish.

This is very peculiar, I came to the music board this morning to start a thread asking about popular songs you didn’t discover until well after their release. I’ve had a couple songs that I heard and went to see when they were released only to find out they’ve been hits of the band for 15 years

So many mainstream pop/rap/country songs...

The missus is always dumbfounded and impressed that I manage to never hear a song, that was the biggest on the planet, until many years after the fact...

Not sure how anyone could haver been alive in the early 90s and missed this earworm. It was everywhere. I would have paid money to have missed it.

I'd never heard of My Bloody Valentine until years after Loveless came out.

I had a 3 year old and a one year old. If you are still not sure how, then I don’t know what to say. Haha!

But here’s one that even baffles me and makes me wonder what planet I was on.
Hammer to Fall.
Didn’t discover it until about 5 years ago. Awesome song.
So maybe I was under a rock.

It was originally released in 88, but it didn't chart in the U.S. until sometime in the early to mid 90s. It seemed like Mtv played the video every hour for months.

Other than Coconut by Harry Nilsson, I can't think of a song that's harder to get out of your head, once it gets in there.

Same. I’ve still probably never heard most of the “biggest songs on the planet” over the last 20 years.

We have reward activities at school sometimes that involve music being played. It’s very rare for me to have ever heard any of the songs that all of the kids are singing along to.

What’s even more perplexing is how do all of these 12-13 year old kids know every step to line dances to many of these songs that I’ve never heard?

Same here too. Contemporary music in pretty much all genres started declining in the late 90s. When I hear something that sounds newer(whether it's pop, rap, bro country, etc) it pretty much always sounds like generic, cookie cutter garbage.

Forget songs, or albums, or even acts.

I missed the entire genre of alt.country for most of its history, only discovering it after Wilco, Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams, Old 97s, Gourds, et al were well into their careers. I was eventually to see the bands mentioned before most of them gave up: as someone once noted in the immortal comment: "Alt.country is the only genre with more bands than fans".

I am glad that name stuck as opposed to the y'alternative one thrown about in the mid 90s...

I did like the Country and Westerberg nickname for them back then though...

Too bad that one never caught on:

"You goin' to the y'alternative show tonight?"

"I generally don't watch Conan, but there's a new y'alternative band I wanna see gonna be on"

"Oh Buffy have you seen the lead singer in that new y'alternative band? He's so dreamy!"

Same here. I would have loved to have seen them back in the day. Didn't know about them until 2009

Well, I saw son volt and wilco back in the day and they always sold out in Dallas. And Old97s and Gourds drew good crowds too.

The song was released in 1988, in the UK and Australia.

It wasn't released in the US until 1993 when it was used in the film Benny & Joon.
