this might be better suited for a spin-off thread but here's a song that definitely puts me in a particular mood. Not sad necessarily but just a powerful song by one of the great vocalists of our time.

A song about someone he was very close to dying. Beautiful lyrics.

Swingin Utters - H.L.S.
A song about one of the guy singing’s best friends and ex-band mate, also one of my very good friends, dying. Heiko was a great dude and drank himself to death. His passing hit a lot of people pretty hard.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Not the most fanatical fan of this band but this is a fantastic album. The song is about growing up in the safe bubbles of the suburbs and reaching the age where the innocence of youth is ripped away and when the traps of adulthood and tensions/divisions/dangers in society reveal themselves to you.

The Arrivals - Pull Down the Willows
Hugely underrated, criminally unknown band and this song is about taking care of someone you love who is very sick while trying to keep your emotions in check and remain strong for them.

Bad Astronaut - One Giant Disappointment
A side project of Joey Cape from the band Lagwagon. The song is from the last record of the band’s three and it’s about his best friend and band mate in Bad Astronaut, Derrick Plourde, the drummer—who was also the first drummer in Lagwagon. Plourde killed himself in the middle of recording this record and this is Cape’s song lamenting Plourde’s death and his choice to off himself. Sad stuff.
