They are a greatly underrated band. They got big with extremely simplistic songs that Daniel wrote as a high school freshmen. A few of those songs are still catchy, but you can definitely see progression from Frogstomp. Even Freakshow was a pretty big step forward, but they started falling out of favor around then.

I feel like most people were turned off when they shunned the punk sound for more mature compositions, but they really hit their own with Diorama and Neon Ballroom. Both are fantastic albums.

When I first heard Young Modern, I was kind of put off. I remember referring to it as "adult contemporary" upon first listening. Then, over time, I came to truly appreciate it. Several songs bring me back to the early days of Genesis with Gabriel. Johns really expands his vocals on this album and the overall production is very epic.

Neon Ballroom is the only album I listened to fully and appreciated. My favories are Emotion Sickness and Black Tangled Heart.

I think a lot of people instantly hated Diorama because of Across the Night. It is such a soft way to start an album, but once you get past it, there is some serious hard rock: One Way Mule, The Lever.

I have always liked this album. Seems like Daniel was in a pretty dark place when he wrote this album, but I still like it. Freak, Cemetery, and Abuse Me are pretty good tracks IMO.

Yeah, that was around the time that his depression and anorexia got really bad. Then after Diorama he had the whole arthritis thing in his hand. All of it really kind of made it tough for them to stay at the forefront of the industry.

They are one of my favorite bands. Most people don't realize that they had 4 more records after Frogstomp.

Daniel went through some serious shite within the Neon Ballroom days and right when Diorama came out. I can't believe they broke up though, damn

I believe it was his legs.

Actually, it was his entire body. Most importantly, though, his hands and wrists were so bad that he couldn't even pick up a guitar. He said it even made it impossible to sing as deep breaths were very painful.

It was so bad that he contemplated suicide.

I remember they were supposed to the tour the US and it got cancelled because of his illness. They had a birmingham/Atlanta/NOLA stint that never got rescheduled...

They played NOLA on the Young Modern tour and it was fantastic. I was astonished at how well Daniel's voice holds up live. Now, I think they've dropped a couple of songs down a key or octave because of his voice dropping sinc Frogstomp (funny how puberty does that), but his voice is still stellar.

i liked this one ok. Jellyfish kinda beat them to it a decade earlier, but pretty good record anyways.
