I remember this being the first song I remembered all the lyrics to. And remember him playing it live before the 96(?) super bowl.

Can't stand modern country but this is one of my favorites from a great decade of country music,.

It probably pops into my head every few weeks and I have to listen to it.

Great nostalgia for the dancehall I worked at in the late 90's.

My Dad was a touring and session drummer in Nashville for almost 30 years. One night he went down to a local club in town to see some of his friends play and they asked him to sit in. He said he'd done about two songs and suddenly the vocalist announced they were gonna bring up a hot new country singer named Toby Keith.

My Dad said, he walked up on stage and shouted...Should Have Been a Cowboy and then waited for the old man to count it off. The rest of the band kinda all stood there looking around at each other.

None of them had ever heard the song before. It had only been out a few weeks. Mr. Keith didn't take too kindly to then having to share with the band the key and tempo.

BTW, loved Toby and really enjoyed many of his songs.

Blasphemy. He had become almost pop by then.

Side note: Did you watch the movie?
