The numbers are in, and the pandemic has officially turbocharged the market for musical equipment: Online retailer Sweetwater reported record growth last year, surpassing $1 billion in sales; Fender Musical Instruments signed up 900,000 users for its Play lessons app.

The action has been especially pronounced in the secondhand market. David Mandelbrot, chief executive officer of online marketplace Reverb.com LLC, says there’s been a boom for anything that can be used comfortably in the living room—whether guitars, ukuleles, keyboards, or drum machines.

Never-ending isolation has given rise to a condition known as GAS, or gear acquisition syndrome. The affliction has seven stages that are cataloged at the publication Music Radar, beginning with dissatisfaction and desire and culminating in guilt and relapse. Guitarists are the most at-risk population.

I too am afflicted. Plz send help.

I am a statistic. I bought my tele and several random crap pedals last year.

After being happy with my four basses for a long time, I purchased two new basses last year. I also completed a pedal board. Not proud of it, but it happened.

Guilty as charged.

**raises hand**

I too know the pain. I got a great Taylor the other day and if you look down a few threads you’ll see I am ready to move on my grail.

Also, depending on where you are you haven’t been able to blow money in sports bars or clubs or restaurants like years past. So I have surplus disposable $$. Paying down debt and have extra for making outright purchases without financing.

Dave Ramsey would have a stroke, but damn it I want a guitar.

Bought a Spark Amp too.

I upgraded my recording rig last year. I didn’t feel so bad because I sold stuff I was wasn’t using much on eBay. Timed it right as people were getting the first stimmy checks so I did pretty well. But now I don’t have that extra gear laying around and I really want a new archtop. I think I need to talk to someone.

GAS got me last year. Did more buying and selling than I ever have (more buying than selling). Pretty much turned over my whole setup.

GAS is in check. For now.

I'm in the process of building the next one I'll be using for a live rig. Also going to put red light strips under it so it glows and is visible during dark periods, and also antique iron corner brackets.

Lighting really didn't do any favors, its a black and blood red on wood. Inspired by my Dr. Martens at 15.

You really can’t have too many of these. Although I did sell a few last year during my downsizing/upgrading spell.

I actually resisted. The only gear I bought during the shutdown was exercise equipment, because "F*ck" wearing a mask at the gym.

But, there are things way up on the wish list, not the least of which is a better amp and a (likely digital) piano (ETA: And bass and bass amp ).

I didn't buy a new guitar but learned to play the one I had.

Edit: And am now looking to upgrade.

Here’s the money quote from the article

quote:

Obsessing over gear “gives me something to fixate on that I’m convinced will solve my problems,” he says. “But the reality is, I just need to practice.”

Most guitar players need that quote framed in their practice/rehearsal space.

If I spent as much time practicing as I do drooling over gear I'd be doing alright.

There’s another aspect at play. Doing remote tracks, which was already catching on, went into overdrive this past year for obvious reasons.

Players and Singers can buy affordable signal chain gear, install DAW of choice, and work in their pajamas.

Yeah, it's amazing how much better things sound when you've played them 100 times in a row on your worn out beater, rather than picking up a new guitar cold and haven't played in weeks.

I could really use a new board. I have my giant one called the “Spruce Goose”, but as the name suggests, it’s incredibly unwieldy. I have a small laptop bag that I’ve been using, but it only holds about 8 pedals (boss tuner, ehx pitchfork, komet koda, bluesdriver, phase 90, boss chorus, behringer delay, and rougaroux banshee reverb).

I want something between those two in size so I can use a few of my other pedals that don’t get as much play right now (big muff, tremolo, klon clone, wah, etc)

And it may just be that the beater sounds better than the new guitar anyway.
