It depends on what kind of hip hop he likes. I mean, it's not a monolithic genre. I will say that if we're talking popular Jay-Z kind of hip hop, then you want to stick with big riffs and huge beats. AC/DC's Back in Black or Led Zeppelin II are your go to's.

If they are into sampling and more experimental stuff, like a big fan of the Roots or Jurassic 5, then I'd try the rock equivalent. Beach Boys' Pet Sounds has that clean sound, but if they like it dirty, try some lo fi. Guided by Voices, Pavement, something where you can hear the tape loops.

If it's more of the frick you politics of Kendrick Lamar, then a good punk album is the way to go. Or Rage Against the Machine.

Always tailor your recommendations to the person. If that fails, just go with the Hold Steady, because they are awesome.

Good call. I'd say that identification with the artists might be half the battle.

Thin Lizzy would be another thought.

For some reason, I cannot let go of Van Halen's first album.

So offering one of the very best examples of a rock album (heck, any genre) is an "atrocious answer"?

Got it.

Given the context in the OP, yes.

It helps to know your audience.

Too many people didn't read the prerequisites. You cannot offer any relative of rap.

This has to be culture shock.

That said, I think the hooks on any of Van Halen's first albums and the charisma of Dave, along with the others' talents, just makes me say them. I mean what kid wouldn't love hearing "Runnin' With the Devil" and the lyrics within and think that it sort of fits with his current street mentality? "I live my life like there's no tomorrow..."

My bad, I'm a worthless POS.

That being said, due to their blues roots I'd suggest something like Cream Disraeli Gears or Led Zeppelin II......

Billy Squier. Dude made a fun rock pop sound that can be appreciated by both sides. Not to mention, rap artists have sampled his music for decades.

I was going to reply to the OP, but after reading through this thread, I hit reply at your post.

I only listened to rap (not hip hop, that's the culture, rap is the music part of the umbrella - whether it's good or bad), for a decade plus from give or take the early 90s in to the early aughts. I never thought I'd leave the culture. And then I heard The Strokes first EP. And then debut album. It all changed. Granted, it didn't stick b/c of The Strokes.

But it did stick b/c of Craig Finn and The Hold Steady. The first three albums are beyond my favorites.

(If it helps, I was an east coast kid that liked anything from Souls of Mischief to Raekwon, Dilated Peoples to Smif N Wessun).

Today I'll go through some of my favorite rap tracks now and then, but mostly it's bands like (and albums from) THS, Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, The National, War On Drugs. Go figure, I sound like a Pitchfork guy.

TL/DR, Craig Finn is the answer.
