The origins of that song are just as gut wrenching. Seems a singer/songwriter trying to get his start in Nashville sang it at an open mic night and brought the house to tears since it was based on the story of his grandparents.

Mattea got to record that song and it was a hit for her.

Background – the song is about his father who has stage IV kidney disease. For what it’s worth last I read his father has Improved
