...with a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

Too many people remember him for Werewolves and his "Excitable Boy" album and overlook his first real album "Warren Zevon". It's damn strong and one of my favorite albums, period.

quote:
Desperados Under the Eaves
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up
And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill
Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves
Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmm...
Look away
(Look away down Gower Avenue, look away)

Excitable Boy is one of the all time great albums (at least IMO).
Warren Zevon is also top notch, but not quite the same level at EB front to back.
Accidentally Like A Martyr
"The hurt gets worse
And the heart gets harder"

WZ's catalogue kicked arse from the first album, through the last one he recorded right before his death. Accidentally a Martyr, Jesus Mentioned and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead are some of my favorites.

My second favorite WZ song.
ETA: Tigris posted my favorite.
My 3rd is what I play as I'm driving to court for any trial:
I went home with a waitress
The way I always do . . .

She really worked me over good
She was a credit to her gender
She put me through some changes, Lord
Sort of like a Waring blender

I started as an altar boy
Working at the church
Learnig all my holy moves
Doing some research
which ends in one of my favorite Zevon lines:
I'm thinking of retiring
From all my dirty deals.
I'll see you in the next life,
Wake me up for meals!

I tend to be more a fan of his introspective songs than his over the top stuff.
quote:
I'm too old to die young
And too young to die now
quote:
All alone on the road to perfection
At the inspection booth they tried to discourage me
quote:
Darkness in the morning
Shadows on the land
Certain individuals
Aren't sticking with the plan
And I'm searching for a heart
Searching everyone
They say love conquers all
You can't start it like a car
You can't stop it with a gun
quote:
The phone don't ring
And the sun refused to shine
Never thought I'd have to pay so dearly
For what was already mine
For such a long, long time
We made mad love
Shadow love
Random love
And abandoned love
Accidentally like a martyr
The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder

I saw him in NOLA in like 86 or 87. Great show. I was always a fan, I'm talking about loving his lyrics when I was 12. Just a cerebral, unsentimental, acerbic wit with everything he did. I was listening to " my shits fricked up" a couple of days ago thinking who in the hell writes that.

He played in Baton Rouge at the Varsity twice, back to back years in the early 90's. He had warm up bands but when it was his turn it was just Zevon doing acoustic. The first time he came there was almost nobody in the Varsity when his set started. I was on the floor 10 feet from him when he opened with Splendid Isolation. Great concerts. By the second year the word got out better. This is my ticket from one of them, not sure which.
His career was in a deep funk at the time, it wasn't until later that Letterman had him on frequently and he started to swing back up into popularity.

That's a great song.
I really love Preludes. Y'all should check it out if you haven't heard it. It's an album made from demo tapes that WZ made for a lot of his songs. So it's him playing stripped down versions.
The thing that drives me crazy about WZ is some of the production and arrangement choices that were made on some of his stuff. The songs are phenomenal, but the sound is kind of dated to me. Preludes solves that.
"And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this old hotel will still be standing
Until I pay my bill"
