1933-2032

He played saxophone and wrote compositions in a way that know one else before him did. I am big Weather Report fan, and they changed the way I listen to music. He lived a good long life and made a big mark. Rest in peace, Wayne.

This performance never ceases to blow my mind. The musicianship is unreal.

Keeping an eye out for Rick Beato's response. Beato is a fan of all those jazz legends, and in fact interviewed Ron Carter about a year ago.

One of the last remaining real giants. Herbie & Ron are still around from that legendary Miles quintet. Shorter's records with them along with of course his own Blue Note records are all time classics. Then his work with Weather Report and Zawinul established a completely new wound.

His last record in 2018, Emanon, was a 3 disc set, very ambitious and not what you expect from someone at 85! Great composer and bandleader in addition to player. He made a huge impact on music.

He played (fantastically) on two of my favorite jazz records ever, which both happen to be Miles masterpieces: "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew."

Obviously, his career requires no heralding, but the man was a magician on the sax.

I wish we had more musicians like Wayne Shorter around, genre irrelevant. He will be missed. RIP.

I haven't thought about Wayne Shorter and Weather Report in years, but yes, I was a big fan.

I'm not sure he gets enough credit as a composer. I think Speak No Evil is a masterpiece. And look at the lineup playing it.

One of the best. Played on so many seminal albums.

Not many left from that era...
Roy Haynes 97
Lou Donaldson 96
Sonny Rollins 92
Ahmad Jamal 92
Kenny Burrell 91
Ron Carter 85
Herbie Hancock 82
Al Foster 80
