If you never saw this band live, you missed a wonderful show. They were tight. Their sound captures my colllege years perfectly and make me wonder about the “song writing” of today. They were simple, pure and hard working. Pat wrote his feelings and wasn’t afraid to tell that story. I always hoped that the varsity would have them at some point. Would have been epic.

God speed Pat. You will be Only a Memory.

Damn. Really sorry to hear that. Extremely underrated band. Maybe the most of that era in my opinion.

Makes me think about the song "Fire and Rain". I always thought that I'd see him again. I saw them 3 times and kept hoping in recent years that they'd play within shooting distance so I could hear them at least one more time.

RIP Pat. I'll be listening to some Smithereens today.

I was lucky enough to see them numerous times since moving to NJ in 2006. Caught them in New Orleans years and years ago.
Just saw them a few months ago at the Wonderbar a few blocks from my house.
My wife was friends with Pat and I got to meet him at all the shows and talk to him.
His health was failing recently, he had pretty must lost the use of his arms and had a fall at his home, but they were announcing tour dates for 2018 just last week.
Sad, I lived their music and he could write a good pop song.

Sad. They were my favorite band for a long time. It's been awhile but I saw them live several times, the first time was March 1990 on the 11 tour. RIP Pat.

Wow that makes me sad. Loved the Smithereens. I know Pat had lots of health problems. He recently did some living room concerts for fans, and I was strongly considering lining one up for a birthday party.
RIP, Pat, and thanks for the great music

Good post and same here. They did play the varsity in 92 or 93 I think and it was a great show, just a tight band.

I saw them somewhere in Baton Rouge in the early 90s but it wasn't the Varsity. I won the tickets off of KLSU. I agree they were great and very good live- they were on tour for a new album and I remember it being kind of sad that folks were screaming for them to play "Girl Like You", etc. rather than their new stuff.

I seem to remember them playing in BR around the time of the Endfest in New Orleans that they played the same year which is why I skipped it.

Probably 7/16/94 at the Texas Club. If that's the one I remember, I had to hang antennas off of every tall building between there and LSU to get the live broadcast back to KLSU's studios. Did I get permission? Maybe...

Sad news. I only saw them once, on the 11 tour. Great performance. Met them before the show....they were on top of the world, yet they couldn't have been any nicer or more down to earth.

Great band. This is one of those groups I'd play for my friends constantly to try to break them out of their "we only listen to classic rock" mode.

I saw these guys in New Orleans a couple of times back in the late 80's/early 90's. Always a consistently great show.

(cue CJ35 and the "older than dirt" reference...)
