Mac Davis, the singer-songwriter who parlayed pop and country hits into a network TV variety show and acting career, has died. He was 78.
His manager of nearly four decades, Jim Morey, announced Davis’ death on Facebook Tuesday night. “He was a music legend but his most important work was that as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend,” Morey wrote. “I will miss laughing about our many adventures on the road and his insightful sense of humor.” The Country Music Association later confirmed the news.

A human being has passed from the earth. I'm not sticking his name in a thread about other dead people.

Aw damn. He wrote “Memories” which Elvis made famous.
A couple years ago there was a 68 Special thing on NBC where modern artists recreated some of the performances from the 68 Special. Mac Davis sang Memories and did really well to be that old.

Loved Mac Davis. Back from the generation of singers who could write with a sense of humor.
He wrote "In The Ghetto", "Mermories" and "A Little Less Conversation" for Elvis.
Singer-songwriters almost always have the best version of their songs.
Case in point: "Watching Scotty Grow"
Never got to see him live but always wanted to. It's a sad day around this house today. RIP

When he had his show, he had a part every week, where he could write a song instantly, based on any title suggestion.
Of course it was all rigged, and he wasn't really coming up with that stuff off of the cuff, but I remember one time, somebody suggested the title, Britches For My Horse. He wrote his song about, how you could make a big enough zipper.

He'd do this when he'd appear on the Tonight Show. Carson would go out in the audience and someone would throw out a line or a subject and he'd come up with a tune. Always good stuff.
