"Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"
.. only one of the best lines ever written in a song, any genre. There is so much haunting imagery in this song, the desperation and sadness is palpable to anyone listening.
And that plaintiff guitar wails like a seaman's freshly born widow.

quote:I hope that downvote was a mistake..........That's a great first song on a great album, Summer Side of Life.
Now he's traded off his Martin
But his troubles are not over
For his feet are almost frozen
And the sun is sinkin' low
Won't you listen to me brother
If you ever loved your mother
Please pull off on the shoulder
If you're goin' Milwaukee way
It's ten degrees and getting colder
Down by Boulder dam today

Was just listening to Sundown the other day.
Was reading that song is about Cathy Smith who he was dating at the time. She was the woman who, a few years later, was with John Belushi and injected him with the heroin that killed him.

Catherine Evelyn Smith (25 April 1947 – 16 August 2020)[1][2] was a Canadian occasional backup singer, rock groupie, drug dealer, and legal secretary. Smith served 15 months in the California state prison system for injecting actor John Belushi with a fatal dose of heroin and cocaine in 1982
quote:
Smith has been connected to the Band's famous song, "The Weight" (1968).[10] Smith says in Rock and Roll Toronto: From Alanis to Zeppelin (1997),[11] that Richard Manuel offered to marry her, but she refused.[10] Nevertheless, she continued to tour and party with Helm, Danko, and Manuel through the 1960s, and at one point became pregnant with a child known as "The Band baby," as its paternity was unclear.

Cathy Smith
Saw a picture of her about 15 years ago and she looked really rough back then, like a combination of too much booze, cigarettes and probably meth.

That is why they used it as an inside joke in Knives Out. A song about a woman who accidentally causes the death of a celebrity with an overdose in a movie about a woman who thinks she accidentally caused the death of a celebrity with an overdose.

I always enjoyed his music. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Such an evocative songwriter. Listen to “The Circle Is Small” and you hurt with him and despise the girl.
