Whats this board's opinion of him?

I understand he isn't as talented vocally as many others and his songwriting isn't as "deep" as a Tyler Childers but I really like that he writes his own music and its simple songs about simple things, its also very Southern oriented music since he's from Alabama.

If you don't know who he is then here's a couple of his songs.

The first is a song released recently with Randy Owen of Alabama about the COVID situation.

Better Than Me

Bury Me In Dixie

I Wish Grandpas Never Died

Riley Green went to Jacksonville State. Played on the football team. Bury Me In Dixie has a reference "take me back to Jacksonville/ Drive me up mountain street/ Lead me into old Paul Snow (Stadium)

Jamey Johnson also went to JSU. He was a member of the Gamecock band.

And of course Alabama lead singer Randy Owen is a graduate of Jacksonville State, too.

I like some of his music. A bit cliche sometimes, and some of his lyrics you have to be from the area to understand.

Riley is also a big Auburn fan apparently.

In Bury Me in Dixie he has the lines "Or take me to Toomer's Corner, put me under an oak tree/Give 'em toilet paper till they mummify me"

Then in Georgia Time he throws out "I told her I'm from Alabama, she said hell I am too/She said she was a roll tide fan, I said I bleed orange and blue"

I've noticed this too but it still feels more genuine than most pop country bros these days. Cliches are cliches for a reason. Sometimes they're overdone but they're based on common experiences that many people have.

He's awful. How many songs about trucks does he have now after that new one that was released yesterday?

quote:

Where would I have raised all that hell?
Talked to God all by myself
How would I have got to Tennessee?
Without a bucket seat?
Where was I supposed to cry that July day granddaddy died?
Or haul that deer, drink that beer
Fell in and out of love
If it wasn't for trucks
If it wasn't for trucks

This song is If I Didnt Wear Boots and its on the same release as If It Wasnt For Trucks that came out yesterday.

quote:

Probably would've never took daddy's truck
Snuck you out just to get us stuck
In a field out there under a no where moon
Girl I wouldn't have you

If I didn't wear boots I wouldn't have a place to put that flask
That gave me the nerve to get me to ask you to dance
Sweep you off your feet like cowboys do
If I didn't wear boots you prolly would've never took this ride
Left that bar for a starlit sky
And I wouldn't be ride here right now lovin' on you
If I didn't wear boots

I mean that’s what country music is. It’s supposed to be simple and relatable. Almost all of RG’s songs are the story of the typical southern dude. That’s why he’s so popular. It’s not all about deep lyrics and layered songs all the time. Sometimes what you see is what you get works for people also

You can be cliche as the next person in mainstream country music, but if you use the same vague descriptors all the time, the song is boring. Riley Green writes like a 16 year old who watches tv and figures out what sounds country from that.

Those two songs I posted are on the same EP that he just put out. Two songs almost exactly the same out of 5 on a new project. I hope he didnt hurt his head thinking too hard what rhymes with truck and beer.

Here's the GOAT truck song if you want to see someone that knows how to write.

quote:

"Songs About Trucks"

Whatever happened to a feeling bad song
Lost the best damn woman that you ever had song

It's all four wheel drives and jacked up tires
Rollin' out of them speakers
But for a trip down memory lane tonight
I need something a little deeper

Than s10 Chevy's or f150's
Flatbed Dodge ram dirt road ditties
Headlights taillights Daddy's Eldorado
Dashboards ditches or silver Silverados

Down by the lake or down by the river
Mud bank no thanks
I'm just gonna sit here and miss her
So mister here's my 20 bucks
Don't play no songs about trucks

Most nights I don't really mind 'em
With the windows down Hell I might even rewind 'em
But since my heart got broke
I don't wanna drive around
Just wanna let this heartache soak
Up a sadder sound

Than s10 Chevy's or f150's
Flatbed dodge ram dirt road ditties
Headlights taillights Daddy's Eldorado
Dashboards ditches or silver Silverados

Down by the lake or down by the river
Mud bank no thanks
I'm just gonna sit here and miss her
So mister here's my 20 bucks
Don't play no songs about trucks

Or trailers or tailgates or tractors
I'm gettin' drunk, but not in a pasture
This bar stool is right where I'll stay stuck

Yeah have another beer
But I don't wanna hear
No songs about trucks

No no no
No more songs about trucks
No no no no no

He’s actually famous for duck hunting shows before he even did music. He’s always hunting and is well known in the hunting game. Probably way more “country” than some of the hipster country artists that are associated with Texas country. There’s a fine line between redneck and hipster in the genre.

is steve earle "country"? just because you disagree with their politics doesn't mean they don't write great songs.

isbell has never claimed to be "country" fwiw. from all of the music that he's done, I don't think you can actually pigeon hole him. he's rock, he's folk, he's americana, he's blue grass. like sturgill, he transcends genre labels.

Not the politics just the style of music. It’s not country. You’re right he’s his own genre but it damn sure isn’t country. It’s hipster
