Damn you OP,
I just pulled the trigger on a Fender Player Tele.
I have been playing a Mexican Tele with double humbuckers for the past 8 years, but its just too muddy for the style of music I am playing now.

Those are fantastic guitars. But I noticed that the MSRP on them just went up by 150 bucks about 6 months ago.

All the Fender MIM stuff is excellent and it gets better and better every year. They continue to integrate CNC and other technologically advanced production equipment as it becomes more affordable. You also can't discount the idea that Fender Ensenada is a product of NAFTA in the 1990s, providing good paying, secure jobs in their geographic reason. The result is low turnover and a subsequent experienced workforce. They have people on the payroll with 10, 15, 20 and over 20 years of service. Just like Corona and for that matter just like Nazareth and pre-Nashville Kalamazoo.
For pure value, look for guitars made in Indonesia. There is only one factory, PT Cort, and they build most everything tagged "Made in Indonesia." Recent Squier, Ibanez, PRS, Jackson, D'Angelico imports. They are producing superior guitars in every price point in which they compete.
And I walk the talk ... I wanted an ES, I had plenty of budget with which to work, and I still bought an Indonesian D'Angelico Premier SS last year. It will run head to head with any Gibson ES at about a fourth of the street cost, and it's actually better in many ways.

i second the recommendation to get different styles in your hands at a guitar shop and see what you like. I like to buy guitar brands that aren't super popular. So, I was against buying a fender at first. So, I ended up buying a duplicate of a Gibson SG buy a different company just to be different.
I hated how it felt in my hand. Then, I went and played some actual Gibsons of different varieties. Played some PRS guitars, and a few other brands. I just didn't like any of them. None of them made me want to pick them up and keep playing.
I ended up being gifted a MIM Squire Strat and loved how it felt in hand. Just how it felt made me want to play it every day.
So, I bought an American Strat and haven't looked back.
tl;dr - you need to get one that you like how it feels in your hand and sounds. Something that you want to pick up. None of us can tell you waht that will be.

I bought this Charvel that’s made in Indonesia. Seems to be really well made, but what do I know.

Is anything Gibson builds new right now actually worth the cost vs imported competitors?

Damn you OP,
Gas got another one. Just bought a new cabinet today that I have convinced myself that I "need".
I love Fender. Love, love Fender. My one complaint is how they do the colors. Look at the MIM line and Squiers and there always lots of cool colors. But, shell the bucks for the top of the line American model and you'll get white, black, sunburst, and maybe one other color and you'll like it.

Not that I can think of off hand. Which is truly sad.

I tried out those Fender Modern Player teles and I absolutely hated them. They were trying to sound like a tele, and gibson, and a strat all in one guitar and ended up sounding like crap instead. I HATED the pickups. I’m glad you like it

I have an Agile with Slash PUs the previous owner was kind enough to put in. It is a SLAB of wood. If I ever want to get crazy I could change pots and caps. But I love the thing. And it is sad that for me to get a Gibson built as well I’d have to add a zero to what I paid for it.
Even has a flame maple top that I love. Because it has a mistake. You know it was hand done. Looks like he was rolling along and somebody distracted him for a second. Lol. I like shite like that.

Everybody does. See them every now and again for about 300 bucks.
Didn’t pay attention of the OP had a price range but that’s a good place. And a guitar that’s better than a starter guitar. IMHO

This thread fueled my dormant GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) I suffer and I bought a PRS 24 SEPRS USA Custom 24 BW - Black Gold Wrap Burst exactly like this today.
Just felt a little better in my hands than the Gretsch Hollow Body they had in stock (I still want a D'Angelico hollow body) plays great and replaces my daily player (Aria Pro II) that I busted the headstock on. Thanks for feeding the GAS beast!

I think I’m between the Squier Affinity Tele and the same model Strat. I just don’t know which one yet until I put each in my hands.
Pretty sure I’m sold on the Surf Green, though

Check on the Affinity for country of origin. If made in China, stay away. If Indonesia, you’re cool. On Squires, the Classic Vibe line is the best bet.
