That place sucked...waaaaay too many new records; there were few treasures to be found.
Said no one ever. I suggest you check it out on a non rsd. There is plenty of treasure to find there. The best local selection in the city, and did you even make it upstairs?

I wanna go to a REAL record store
I invite you to fly to Los Angeles and pay a visit to Amoeba Records...it's the mother of all record stores in the USA (and I've been to numerous record stores in over 20 states over the years).
Amoeba's New Orleans music section is bigger than most record shops in New Orleans!--it has its own 1200 sq. ft. room!
They also have many hard to find and rare Blue Note LP's as well as other one-off LPs from every decade. It's easier or them to acquire all these type records when they have had 35 million people in the surrounding area for 40 years buying and trading records--their market is huge.
All their better stuff is graded (using the standard grading system). All records have jackets.
Usually when I go, there is always a band or DJ spinning cool records. The place is huge and packed on a Friday/Saturday night--kinda almost like a place for a young person to take a date---pretty cool place.
I have been to most of the record stores in NYC and they don't compare to Amoeba.
I am traveling to L.A. In 5 weeks for the L.A. High End Audio Show. There are 2 Dead & Co. Shows the two days before--we will catch both shows. Since I will be there 5 days, I will probably make a couple trips to Amoeba.
About 8 years ago or so, we went to the Amoeba in the Haight District of San Fran on a Friday night. They have a stage for local bands to play and gain some notoriety. We saw this band fro about 30 minutes while we shopped and thought they were actually pretty decent. About 2 months later, my wife was watching Leno or Letterman, I forget which, and she says, "come see--that band we saw at Amoeba is on The Late Show"---it was Vampire Weekend.

My first ever RSD, and I leanred to get there early and have more money. Some cool free shite I got in the bag, but really odd for there to be an Icona Pop matchbook.

I usually get in line around 6-6:30 AM every RSD. This usually puts me in the front 3-4 people (there is usually someone that gets there at 4 AM for first position).

Yeah, I don't understand the complaint. That there was a line or that they only have new records? There was only a line because of RSD and they have tons of used records, the majority of the first floor and nearly all of the second.

Give me the best dead show, or year, to check out.
I have listened to GD, but never really jumped all into it.

you will get 100 different answers from 100 different deadheads
here is my suggestion:
1) start with this
FILLMORE EAST APRIL 1971
2) if you like it, then get this
VENETA 8/27/72
then, you are off to the races
you can listen to nearly every show here
RELISTEN
71- 73 is generally their peak, 68- 70 is a good next stop, then 76- 78

1977 is widely regarded as the best, but Donna is the fricking worst ever. Early 80s is very high up on my list. '80 & '82 are probably my two favorites from that era. While it is nearly impossible to make a Top 5, 10, 15, etc, I strongly recommend listening to these 5 shows:
5.8.77
8.27.72
3.21.81
8.3.82
11.30.80
