Robert Hunter us to a certain band he wrote many songs for.
The band was founded* by the answer to this thread's OP.
*fwiw...This founder was also a Bluegrass player like..... Billy Strings. (Insert Mind Blown Gif Here)
1977 Peggy-O stitched together for your review ( and enjoyment)

Slash would not even make the list. You must be very young
Now I wouldn’t put him close to #1, but Slash is definitely on the list. You’re biased or blind, or just hating.

A list studio players
You’ll get downvoted for that comment, which shows most folks truly have no understanding of musicianship. More times than not, folks consider “the best” to be from a genre of music they personally enjoy. That’s cool. It’s what makes music great.
However, wouldn’t a true discussion of “the greatest” guitarist give a large dose of credence to players who could play multiple genres well? I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with dedicating yourself to one style, but the most gifted musicians are those who can stretch and not be pigeonholed to rock/blues.

Quite possible that Jeff Beck is the most proficient player out there today.

Billy Corgan never gets his due. Positively unique-style.

I know his songs weren't the hardest to play but David Gilmour's combination of melody, tone, and feel make him my favorite guitarist ever. His solos are just more memorable and better sounding to me than any other guitarist.
I know most people are impressed with pure speed because it's "hard to play" and therefore the fastest guitar player in the world therefore must be "the best" but I'd suggest watching some YouTube videos of guys setting the record for fastest player in the world (playing Flight of the Bumblebee) and you'll quickly realize that speed isn't what makes a great guitarist.

You seem to have forgotten SRV and Hendrix

Yes, unfortunately I forgot about them. Both certainly belong on the list as does Carlos Santana and Joe Bonnamasa.

The best guitar players in the world are most likely not in top bands. I have always said Eddie Van Halen is probably the best guitar player that was in the top rock band in the world at some point. Yingwi Maalmsteen is probably actually better though

No love for Bruce Anthony Johannesson?
Known to most as C.C. Deville.
I thoroughly enjoy many Poison songs... but that's an even far worse choice than Slash.
In all honestly, this is such a subjective question with about a million factors in play. Define best. Best by genre, best in terms of technical ability, best in terms of emotion/feel?

I am an old fart and must admit that I didn’t know who Billy Strings is. Checked out his version of “Voodoo Child” and Hendrix has always been my favorite, but Jesus, this guy is really good. I need to get out more.

Tom of bluegrass people are or have been that good. He is just a guy who branches out. He plays the classic bluegrass stuff but does the things you know other guys could do because of their skill. He/They can play anything if you give them a few minutes and a recording. Any genre. More than fast enough to do the fastest metal. Finger pick, hybrid pick.
Billy Strings makes me sad. I started playing too old. Doesn’t matter. I’d never be that good but damn it I could be faster. Lol

if we re saying alive or dead then its easier .In no particular order: Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Randy Rhoades, EVH, Jimmy Page . Ill stop there as there are hundreds of others obviously.

That list would have to extend to around 10,000 for him to make it There are a 1000 12 year olds on YouTube that are better guitarist.
