I committed to trying to find new music a few years back. It takes quite a bit more searching than when I was younger, but there's some good stuff out there. Good, not great.

Modern music has a tendency to be very derivative, one note and lazy relative to prior decades, so if you grew up in those prior decades, you have to approach it with a very forgiving ear. Personally, I just ran out of interest. "Bands" are often just one or two people that rarely if ever tour and eject to the next "project" with little warning. And local music scenes - outside of the major metros - are largely small or dead altogether...because most music is made in someone's bedroom in garageband or something similar. God bless those poor bastards trying to make a living in it these days.

I'm with OP new music today is absolutely terrible. Can't get into it.

My brother did mention Billy Strings recently and I listened to a few of his songs and he sounded really really good, so I'm glad you brought him up.

I find myself listening to a lot of music that are homages to retro music but with a new spin, like retro/dark/synthwave, metalcore, etc. See if any of these bands do it for you:

The Midnight
At 1980
Bullet for My Valentine
The Bad Dreamers
Mareaux
The Strike
Trope
Kavinsky
Glass Candy
ULTRA SUNN
Starcadian
Chvrches
Gunship
Chromatics

Adam Janzi is one of the most original drummers out there right now. The first song in this show is very creative rhythmically. The singer also brings a unique baritone to the progressive metal sound.

Spotify is really good at helping you out as long as you utilize the like button on songs you like. You'll get Discover Weekly, you can listen to the radio station for a particular song, and there's good pre-made playlists to choose from when you go to any artists' page. Outside of that, I'll pick up recs from this board, year end lists from sites like Paste and reviews from Pitchfork.

For an interesting mix of old and new, look up the Mona Lisa Twins. Lots of oldies covers, especially spot-on Beatles, but some really nice originals in several genres. Very talented (and pretty) young twin sisters who play most of the instruments themselves.

I stick to the music I grew up on. To give an example, this year I’ve seen Pantera, Lamb of God, Static-X, Sevendust and Dope.

Going to Louder Than Life in September to specifically see Slipknot, The Offspring, Sum 41, Slayer, Sevendust, P.O.D. Disturbed, Korn, Judas Priest, etc.

Check out this big playlist I made. Has a good bit of stuff from the past 10-20 years. It's kind of my master playlist, my personal radio if you will. Just hit shuffle, you might find some stuff you like considering what you said you do like in your OP.

They basically made an entire album like that. The band leader, Louis Cole is a damn musical genius. He's like the Napoleon Dynamite of the modern jazz/big band scene. You'll notice that he seems to be surrounded by phenomenal musicians. When Sam Wilkes isn't stanking it up on bass, he calls on Thundercat or MonoNeon.

There is still good music being made, it's seems we have to dig harder to find it though.
I first seriously got into music in the 70's (boy, what an era that was, and what you hear about it is true!). Concerts were plentiful and affordable. Radio like Beeker Street on KAAY late at night.
But I'm like you, it is extremely hard to hear anything 'new' and get excited about it.

I hear new music I like nearly everyday. And I’m kinda picky.

I listen to those daily mix playlists that Spotify makes while I’m working out and I try not to skip the songs I’ve never heard.
My newest find I really like.
