Is this guy the most overrated artist of all time? I mean, look at the scope of his music and tell me he meets that hype. Moderate talent with a following of fricking idiots who think he's a god. God rest his soul.

Prince was a very enigmatic artist, but incredibly talented musically and diverse in that he refused to be pigeonholed. Because he released so many albums and saturated the market, he got overlooked at the tail-end of his career/life(along with changing musical tastes predominating). I feel the 80s acclaim was well deserved, the 90s and 00s meh though he could still deliver live.

Eric Clapton thought he was the best living guitarist at one point when interviewed.

Prince just didn't care about being great at one thing. He did everything. He played everything. All anybody cares about is guitar. He was a fricking badass.

Eric says that about lots of guitarists, I'd take that statement with a grain of salt.

Disagree with this. He was considered a guitar virtuoso, and for good reason. I am not a huge Prince fan and I am not going to pretend like he was better than he was just because he is dead, but he was much more than a moderate talent.

I mean, if we really think about it, most of the 80s metal and rock guitarists were considered virtuosos so I'm not sure how much greater that makes Prince compared to his contemporaries. He was one of the most versatile however in the styles he played.

Thanks tigerdroppings for showing me I'm in the minority on this belief, I needed some grounding in reality. His music still sucks though.

I don't like most of his music, but he was definitely talented.

Rock fans on here and everywhere could give him shite because he did so much pop music.

After hearing the ending solo of Purple Rain all those years ago, and then after he died hearing the Guitar Gently Weeps performance (at a George Harrison tribute) on YouTube, it is easy to be pissed. "Why the frick did he not play more of this?"

Hearing what he was capable of makes you wish that was all he pursued.

If you aren't trolling......you're a fricking idiot.

When he was around the age of 20, Warner Brothers flew him out to LA in order to "test" him in the studio. He wanted 100% creative control over his music, something that the labels simply didn't allow, especially with unproven, 20 year olds from Minneapolis.

WB brought in Ted Templeman (Van Halen, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers) one of the most respected producers in the world to watch him track a song. Prince went in, wrote the song, played every instrument on it, sang every backing vocal track and even did the final mix.

Templeman went back to the executive at WB's and told them......... "give him anything he wants, he doesn't need anyone in the studio with him."

Yep, moderate talent........... How many supremely talented artist can you name that had that type of creative control from day 1? Let me help you....... ZERO.

Prince probably had better producing chops than instrumental chops. He's renowned as an amazing producer and is a great instrumentalist, but would never consider him the greatest at any particular instrument. He's the ultimate jack of all trades.

Look, I'm not saying the guy wasn't a badass. He was a CERTIFIABLE bad arse. But, 99% of his music sucks dicks. Name an album of his you can listen to from track 1 till the end. Don't worry, I'll wait.

His music fricking sucks, bottom line. Oh, it doesn't? Tell me the last Prince song you listened to on your iPhone/iPad.. His. Music. Sucks.
