What's terrible at emo is that the early emo bands are great -- Rites of Spring, Promise Ring, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, hell, even Hey Mercedes. Then Dashboard Confessional* happened and we now have whiny guys in skinny jeans who are "punk" because they have a tattoo.
*In DC's defense - he was playing solo acoustic shows as an opening act for hardcore bands, which is pretty friggin' ballsy. First band gets up, plays raging hardcore. He gets up, plays an hour of love songs, then the headliner. He was daring people to hate him. So he gets a pass.

What do you guys think about the Dead Boys? That's a band I found because big commercial acts, Guns N Roses and Pearl Jam covered their songs.

Of the first wave of CBGB's punk bands, the Dead Boys are the ones that sound the most "punk" to today's ears (yes, Talking Heads were considered punk - that's how expansive the definition was in the early days). I like 'em, but I think the Ramones picked up the template and did more with it.

I thought they were a little later than the Ramones. I don't know too much Punk, beyond the biggies (Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols etc)

Pennywise
NOFX
Pulley
Social D
Bad Religion
Seems like most people here are naming punk bands from the 70's and 80's. Are those really your favorites or just the only ones you know? I mean I appreciate the classics as much as the next guy but most of those bands sucked arse. Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys were ground breaking because it was so anti-establishmentary but was pretty pathetic in term of quality music and really shouldn't be listened to anymore except for research and historical perspective.

I still listen to all the bands I mentioned... I don't listen to a whole lot of punk these days, so rarely do I search out new bands in the genre
I also like:
Bad Brains
NOFX
the Descendents
Screeching Weasel
Op Ivy
Bad Religion
Green Day
Rancid

Not a huge punk fan at all but I do like early "Misfits"
Two pages and first mention of them. Tisk tisk punk fans.

I'm surprised Baloo didn't have The Stooges.

I love both of those bands, but dont really consider them punk... more post-punk. Not arguing, I guess its a broad definition.
I'd have Husker Du only behind The Minutemen, in my list...

80's
I just gravitated more to the early 80's scene in DC, despite it being 20 years before my time as a college student. Something about that whole hardcore thing got me.
But hey don't get me wrong, I love the more modern stuff like Bad Religion, NOFX, Millencolin, and Alkaline Trio as well.

Punk is still punk. OP didn't say if he mean't like Hardcore/Post-Punk/ or just straight up Punk Rock.
<---- this is a Great punk album.
ETA so is this one,too .

well, both bands paved the way for alternative rock. Pearl Jam's VS is basically an homage to MOB's second album.

Well, post-punk means after punk, meaning not punk.
But I hear ya, they are a great band... and their very early stuff had a hardcore slant to it...

I feel like including post-punk opens the door to bands like Joy Division, The Fall, and Gang of Four.
ETA: except all those bands I just mentioned are british
