Somewhere on YouTube there was a video purporting to explain the origins and offer a translation of Crawford's lyrics which the video says he wrote phonetically listening to two "tribes" of Mardi Gras Indians confront each other.
He combined what he heard and got down what was a mix of Creole and a few words of Choctaw(?). Can't vouch for the video's accuracy but the theory is not bad. I have some research of my own to do now. Yet another "long, strange trip" into the web coupled with a few phone calls to some musician friends.
