Elliott Smith:
Some amazing indie work (Roman Candle, Either/Or, Figure 8). Provided most of the soundtrack music for Goodwill Hunting.

Jeff Buckley:
Grace is a great album, his only studio release prior to death. He is he perfect example of a musician that had only began to tap into his potential.

It's close for me between Buddy Holly, Otis Redding and SRV.

(ETA: I see my opinion does change over time...)

Instead of drowning under his boat while drunkenly diving for shite he tossed into the water Dennis Wilson makes a miraculous recovery, single-handedly rescues Brian from Eugene Landy, and kicks Mike Love's arse so hard The Beach Boys actually get their shite together and stop w/the cheese ball shite Love led them into doing during the 80s..

Andy Wood - Mother Love Bone

I'd alway thought about him. After the band dissolved from Wood's death, Jeff and Stone along with Eddie V formed Pearl Jam. So would Pearl Jam exist without them?
