And who has ever cared who the drummer is in a band (no offense, drummers)?

Vinnie Paul was not just any other drummer. He was one of the best drummers ever in heavy metal, and I’m sure most would agree. He was a key component of the Pantera sound. Again, and Phil has stated this, that Pantera was the tightest band he ever played with. You can’t have a tight sounding band without the drummer leading the way.

ETA: It has been confirmed that Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante will be joining Phil and Rex for the reunion tour.
That sounds like a fun supergroup, but that's not Pantera. Won't go see.

This just doesn’t sit well with me. I wonder what Phil and Rex’s true motivation is for this? From the outside it appears like a money grab.

I'll partially give them the benefit of the doubt that they might miss playing the songs live and want to do that in front of a lot of people. Calling it Anselmo Brown might sell out the Texas Club.

But yeah...that also is money grabby at the same time

Sure Vinnie was a great drummer and helped create Pantera’s sound. But let’s not pretend that someone can’t sit in his seat and mimic what he did on songs that he already created. If I’m standing there in the arena listening to Phil growl out Pantera tunes, the last thing on my mind will be, “It’s good...but the drummer just doesn’t sound like Vinnie.”

Phil and Rex didn’t stop being Pantera just because Dime and Vinnie died. Phil and Rex doing Phil and Rex’s songs isn’t a tribute band. And Phil and Rex getting paid to sing Phil and Rex’s songs isn’t a money grab.

I'd LOVE to hear this particular supergroup make an album. It would be great.

As for the drummer, CB is a damn legend in his own right too. I've seen Anthrax twice and he's a beast as well.

Everytime a musician goes on tour its to make money.

A money grab would be, go on tour and not give it their all. I have no doubt that these 4 will do the legacy right.

I've thought about this a good bit before posting.

Pantera doing live shows would be a no go for me only if Phil wasn't the frontman. Yes Dime and Vinnie created the sound, but let's not pretend that their playing can't be replicated, especially by Zakk.

If this was a "new" album, yeah, I'd nope out. But at the end of the day the only thing that would sound different live is the vocals, and that won't be the case.

So if they come even remotely close, I'll be there. If only to hear Pantera songs LOUD AS frick.

Edit. Wish I read this first. You hit the nail on the head sir, you snake grabbing sumbitch!

Zakk Wylde is a completely different guitar player with a style all his own. He isn't going to be "replicating" Dime. It is going to sound like Zakk Wylde playing Pantera.

ETA: You couldn't possibly have a better example than Zakk Wylde...we only have 30+ years of evidence of what he sounds like playing other guitarists work

I would be interested, just not as a rehashed Pantera.

If its all new material, you bet.
