Opinions on a new guitar

I'm buying my first 'big boy' guitar and want opinions on a few different specimen. I've been playing/learning for about 4 years on a loaned American Tele, but I'm ready to buy my own axe for the long haul.
The apple of my eye lately has been the Les Paul studio, because it sounds great and its considerably cheaper than the Standard. I've played on a few different models at GC and love the tone. There is a huge price gap between a LP Studio and an LP Standard however, and I don't want to buy an $800 guitar now and kick myself for not spending the extra money in 2 years. Are the differences between the two really worth the difference in price?
I love the look, feel and legacy of the SG as well. Something about the body just makes it look sinister and shred-ready, but its on the upper limit of what I can afford.
I've grown to love the Tele with its face only a father could love and its great, warm tone...but I'm not ready to settle down with one model for my whole life yet. There will be a Tele in the collection one day, just not today.
I'm open to suggestions or any criticisms on different models, and I'd like to stay around $600-$900. Guitar does not have to be new, I am entirely open to and even leaning towards buying used.

I used to have an SG special with p-90's. it ripped!
I have friends that have standards and they can typically be bought for around $500-1000 used.
craigslist, seriously.
you should. I don't buy anything new. Used gear has been worn in for you already (and the original buyer has taken the hit of depreciation)

Bump for the weekday crowd, I started this with intentions on getting opinions on different models that would be a good, first real guitar. I've done some Craigslistin' and found a few candidates, this one being the most promising:

My buddy has a Studio and I think it plays and sounds great. Would not be worth the extra money to me unless you care about what people think you play, or are gigging around town.

Right on...I won't be gigging any time time soon, mostly just practicing and the occasional jam with my friends, but I don't need professional level equipment for that. Jackson is too bold for me personally, nothing against them, but when I see someone plug in a Soloist they better come heavy with the metal

buy used & save yourself money.
if you want a les paul, pay the extra for a classic, traditional, or standard.
the binding & finish make those guitars look much better than the studios.
if you decide you want something else down the road, you can always sell if for close to what you paid.
look through guitar center's used section on their website. they have a lot to choose from & there are deals to be found if you're patient. they have the same return policy on used gear as they do new.
so if you buy something that you don't bond with, you can always take it back.
the new sg standards are fine instruments as well. Gibson is building them to be more like the '61 reissue. they're much more comfortable to play than a les paul.

if you're going to buy used, ask if you can take the guitar to get it checked out. Last thing you want is to have to do a fret job or start replacing pots, pickups, jacks etc.

Solid advice, that's the only reason I'm weary on buying from a stranger. Although I'm sure they'd be just as weary letting me 'take it to a shop'...I have someone I could bring along who knows what to look for and would be honest with me on whether or not I should buy it.

You never know, I sold an old Les Paul several years ago on eBay and agreed to let the buyer check it out and send me an assessment from his luthier. The original selling price was $2950 and I ended up knocking off about $500 based on the assessment. If the seller is local you could offer to meet him at a shop and throw in another $10 for gas.

I know you said you don't want a tele yet but just to throw it out their, I have a '72 thinline and I love it. Whenever you decide to get a tele I would definitely try one out.

Used is a good way to go, be sure to play anything you buy. As far as the SG goes I have a '61 reissue and it is an absolute beast. I highly recommend it. When you get it dialed in right, it's like getting punched in the face.
